For instance, she reads journals by McKinney which mostly discuss on nursing leadership styles in the healthcare and nursing field. Many a times, she is busy accessing the internet and healthcare and nursing websites to advance her skills in healthcare and nursing. On top of all these, the director of nursing is also a proud reader of magazines which feature on nursing and leadership styles in the healthcare sector.

Nurse Leader

The director of nursing at Hospitality House organization possesses characteristics of a transformational leader. A transformational leader is one who positively impacts his or her colleagues to be more productive and reliable in an organization or in a firm (Gong, Ang & Della, 2018). The director of nursing constantly inspires members of staff across the whole organization and evaluates our duties executions as licenced vocational nursed to determine our progress. She is never harsh on her colleagues, especially in my area of duty where I attend to patients during the day time. Her leadership skills and enthusiasm inspire my desire to venture further in the healthcare and nursing field. The director of nursing at Hospitality house organization holds a meeting with all licenced vocational nurses every weekend and shares her experiences and encounters in the healthcare and nursing field. This trend has triggered my desire to pursue the field of nursing and enhance my knowledge and skills in it.

The trend of holding frequent meetings with licenced vocational nurses is appropriate since it creates a friendly environment for learning and exercising learnt skills. In portraying her competence in leadership skills practice, the director of nursing once handled a case which involved funds mismanagement in the Hospitality House organization. Funds which had been allocated for purchasing bedding materials for the Chronic Schizophrenia patients could not be traced seven months after the yearly budget for the organization was passed. The director of nursing brought in criminal investigation department officers who did a thorough investigation to unveil the mystery of funds disappearing within the organization. It was later on discovered that the director in charge of the residential halls had transferred the funds to his personal banks accounts. The director in charge of the residential halls was fired, taken to court, and the funds recovered.

In another occasion, a strike among the nurses was looming due to low payment and unequal delegation of duties within the organization. As the director of nursing, this issue directly called for her intervention to contain the situation and prevent any loses likely to be incurred due to the strike. The director of nursing was able to mobilise all the registered nurses and licenced vocational nurses during the evening before the kick-off of the strike the following day. Together with motivational speakers and the top management of the organization, a consensus was reached and the plans to initiate a strike dropped. The director of nursing at Hospitality House organization portrayed excellent leadership skills in the two situations by devising counter ways which did not disrupt the normal operations of the organization.

Communication

Healthcare provision to patients involves multiple participants and there is a need to have a reliable channel of communication, able to accommodate the views of each employee (Coiera, 2006). For instance, at the Hospitality House organization there three types of communications which are relied on. There is upward communication, downward communication, and peer communication. All grievances by the nurses are channelled to the top management of the organization though the director of nursing. Likewise, any information from the top management is channelled to the nurses through the director of nursing who has proven to be effective in delivering information. Before any information is channelled to the top management of the organization, it is first discussed up on by all registered nurses and licenced vocational nurses. When a consensus is reached, then the information is passed to the director of nursing to be passed on to the top management.

According to Vermeir et al. (2015), effective and efficient type of communication is very crucial in healthcare organization because it greatly determines the quality of service rendered to the patients (Vermeir et al., 2015). The director of nursing has proven to be efficient and effective in the way she passes information from the nurses and from the top management expect for rare instances when she has seemed to side with the top management. There is a great need of the director of nursing remaining neutral in as far as it is her mandate to pass information to the top management and back to the nurses. One way of ensuring that she remains neutral is by avoiding discussing on information passed to either the top management or the nurses. Her duty should be precisely passing on the information and not participating in giving recommendations or alterations about a piece of information.
