The Maidu were a tribe of Native American Indians from California (Siteseen Limited, 2017) who spoke the Penutian stock language (Encyclopædia Britannica, 2019). They were a semi-nomadic people who inhabited the Sierra Nevada and the northern California valleys (Siteseen Limited, 2017), and they had three habitats- the Sierra Nevada foothills, the mountains, and the inland valleys (Encyclopædia Britannica, 2019). The valley inhabitants were the most developed and prosperous (The Columbia Encyclopedia, n. d.). The Maidu stayed in small village groups, and the dwellings were pole-framed, or brush/skin covered houses, and brush shelters in winter and summer, respectively (The-Crankshaft Publishing, 2019). The Maidu tribe hunted, gathered, and fished for food ((Siteseen Limited, 2017). Children in the Maidu tribe were expected to copy adults, and they were taught life lessons by their grandparents (UXL Encyclopedia of Native Americans, n. d.). In some tribelets, young boys were expected to pick the skill they would love to develop while the girls were taught all the skills needed to be a Maidu Indian Woman (UXL Encyclopedia of Native Americans, n. d.).
