New York and Chicago during the Early I ndustrial R evolution

What were the key inventions and innovations that led to Chicago and New York’s rapid growth?

The discovery of Chicago’s site gave way for the construction of the railroads that turned the place into a center of nationwide railway network. They had established granaries where people in the world would collect their grains. They also had factories for packing meat and distributing it globally. On the other hand, Frederick Olmsted and Calvert Vaux who designed the city with their plan of the Central Park spearheaded New York’s growth. Therefore, New York was established as United States’ best port. It became a massive industrial city.

What consequences did the turn to industrialization and capitalism have, especially for Chicago’s and New York’s poor black and immigrant populations?

There was immense wealth and shocking poverty, which existed side by side. Even with the presence of the aggressive social reformers who spurred industrialization and development of Chicago, there were robbing capitalists and local officials who corrupted their way to the top. One of the dreadful fires occurred in 1871 killing about 300 poor black and immigrant populations and leaving 100,000 others without homes. The Iris and German immigrants were being resisted in New York, even though the city was a great port to receive many people. The city’s artists, innovator and leaders was dealing with the city’s rising conflicts. The conflicts led to the disastrous civil war riots that happened in 1863.

Does the film’s discussion of the prejudices immigrants (especially Irish immigrants) faced in both Chicago and New York provide lessons that apply to our own time? If so, what are those lessons?

Yes, the film’s discussions of the prejudices that immigrants face are a true reflection of what is happening currently. In fact, today it is happening in the entire United States where the citizens of the country are not being welcoming to the immigrants. Today, most of them are sent out of their land. This is because of the struggle for little resources in the country. Donald Trump’s government is waging war on immigrants who are illegally staying in the region. We need to handle the immigrants with respect because they are needed for the development of a region. There is a great disparity between the affluent and the poor, and the government must consider approaches that close this gap.
