A paradigm shift refers to the movement from old ways of doing things, which results in a redefinition of boundaries as new ways of valuing, thinking and perceiving the world emerge (Rosado (1997). In Western cultures, the transition from pre-industrial age to a modern society exemplifies a significant paradigm shift . Efforts of various persons have been attributed to these shifts . One such person is Martin Luther. This essay, therefore, seeks to describe and support Martin Luther’s influence.
Martin Luther was a controversial theologian of the sixteenth century, who went against the authority of the papacy. Luther produced his 95 Theses against the norms of hawking indulgence that was propelled by the Catholic Church. The theses spread across Germany quickly, bringing to question the authority of the church. Through his writings, Luther influenced many Protestant preachers, theologians, and missionaries. Some scholars have argued that the tokens of civilization enjoyed in the modern society were profoundly influenced by Luther .

Christianity has had a profound positive influence on the Western culture than any other teaching. Schmidt (2004) cited that “no other religion, philosophy, teaching , nation, movement—whatever—has so changed the world for the better as Christianity has done.” The 95 Theses against the Catholic hierarchy became a mark of religious freedom that led to the rise of reformation. Luther thus influenced missionaries and theologians who in turn influenced the formation of human rights grounded in Scripture. Luther’s efforts resulted in the rise of Protestantism in the Christian religion. Subsequently, this was the birth of western colonies in many countries (Schmidt, 2004) . These feats justify Martin Luther’s key influence in creating a paradigm shift in the Western Culture.
