BHP Billiton is an Anglo-Australian multinational mining corporation with its headquarters in Melbourne. The company deals in four major operational units including coal, copper, iron ore, petroleum, and potash. The industry’s sustainability is dictated by the depletion of raw natural resources. Sustainability in mining in the recent past has been faced with some challenges . Fossil fuel consumption results in environmental degradation. The company is unsustainable since it has resulted in some consequences. The firm is highly unsustainable since environmental degradation results from the company’s operations. BHP Billiton practices have caused pollution in rivers, and as a result, people got displaced. The mining from the company induced flooding in the rivers causing flooding that hinders agricultural activities. With the failure to feed themselves, the people living along the rivers had to seek for other lands to sustain them. The company tried to run from their responsibility that befell them as a result of pollution by ameliorating the resulting damage. The company hid under the umbrella of the government claiming that the government, in need of mine revenues, discouraged its closure. In return, the deal freed the firm from any future liabilities with regards to environmental damage.

Oil consumption is unsustainable and hence alternative energy means ought to be pursued. With regards to this, the contemporary mining sector is reverting to renewable energy sources. These sources include solar energy, wind energy, and tidal energy. Companies are harnessing this green technology in a bid to ensure that the energy sources are sustainable. Green energy sources also pose minimal environmental damage and hence the consequence of environmental degradation within the energy sector is reduced . Lifestyle changes including cycling and walking are vital in eliminating the use of fuel-driven vehicles. The transport lifestyle coupled with the use of renewable sources of energy help achieve sustainability in the mining sector.
