There are many reasons that can cause conflict between two parties. When the need to resolve a dispute between two parties arises, people often resort to using various methods such as mediation, arbitration, or negotiation to resolve their differences. Mediation as a method of conflict resolution places the outcomes of the cause of conflict in the hands of the parties involved. This article will answer what the best situation for using mediation is. Also, the paper will discuss reasons to why mediation is the best in such a case. Furthermore, the essay will conclude on some of the benefits and drawbacks of mediation.

Mediation becomes a favorable option in conflict resolution when the conflicting parties have to come to a mutual understanding or when they ought to continue working together. During mediation, a neutral third party known as a mediator is usually present. In a situation where a couple disagrees, mediation is by far one of the best methods of conflict resolution as it can help provide a neutral, non-threatening environment for discussion and eventually arriving at a joint agreement.

There are various advantages to why meditation is the best method when resolving a disagreement between a couple. Some of these benefits include, the process is affordable. It is favorable when money is scarce, and the disagreeing parties intend to avoid the high charges that arise from other methods such as arbitration. Furthermore, the process allows both parties to reach a joint agreement on their own, making it favorable for our situation. Also, mediation repairs and builds new or existing relationships that are important to a work's success. Besides, the method is advantageous in our case as it requires compromise; thus, there are no winners or losers in the process.

Just like any other conflict resolution method, mediation has its wins and drawbacks. Some of its advantages include the way is a cheaper alternative when compared to other conflict resolution methods such as arbitration. Also, the process requires that both parties reach a joint resolution on their own, favoring the continuation of a relationship. Mediation is advantageous as it requires compromise from both parties. The process furthermore favors both disagreeing parties as it has no winners or losers. Moreover, the method maintains a high degree of confidentiality; this can be a fundamental reason when the disagreeing parties do not want their disagreement to be heard by others. Lastly, the method is quick as it does not require investigation.

Despite the various advantages that the method carries, there also exist multiple disadvantages to the technique. A few of these drawbacks to the process include, in the case where a common ground fails to be established, the method becomes ineffective as the mediator has no power to make any decisions. Also, the process requires that both parties must agree to mediate. Furthermore, one of the disagreeing parties may be unwilling to cooperate or compromise. Another reason is, the process requires that both parties must agree to a resolution. The process is not favorable where one party desires public disclosure of the matter to be mediated.

To conclude, mediation forms just a few of the many alternative conflict resolution methods used in dispute resolution. The process has its apparent advantages, such as being a relationship builder. On the contrary, the methods also possess some disadvantages, like being ineffective when a standard agreement fails to be reached. Eventually, it is up to a conflicting party to decide the method's effectiveness if they are willing to compromise and ultimately get to a common understanding in resolving their conflict.
