Barcode technology was invented in 1961 by the Hospital Management Systems. The Barcode technology use skyrocketed in hospitals and non-profit health organizations (Yao, Chu, and Li, 2012). Barcode technology has played a significant role in healthcare since its discovery. Barcode introduction health care was introduced to improve the standards and operations of health care. Barcodes made it easy to access information technology and the management systems of health care facilities (Yao, Chu, and Li, 2012). However, the barcoding technology was aimed at ensuring that the service delivery in healthcare facilities was of high standards. Barcode use in healthcare facilities was aimed at reducing the costs incurred by medical facilities and improving the safety measures of the barcode technology. The following are the operational impacts that were revolutionized by barcode technology.

Barcodes played an essential role in the healthcare facilities in the identification of drugs. The barcode scanners are linear and readable. Barcodes have played a significant role in providing detailed information on drugs. The barcodes implement the drug identification by creating bar code information on the medicine (Yao, Chu, and Li, 2012). The barcodes through the use of barcode scanners provide detailed information on the item or medicine that has undergone scanning. The barcode scanners can identify the drug through the use of the barcode identification numbers placed on the item. The barcode code scanners can provide the adequate information on the date of manufacturing of the drug, the date of expiry of the drug and the relevant name of the manufacturer of the drug. The scanners can offer medication information on the dosage pertinent to the medicine.

Blood infusion safety and Specimen collection

In medical facilities, medical practitioners are required to diagnose the related disease, monitor the medication activities of a patient and assess the health of the patients. Specimens collected from the body of an individual will enhance correct results of the test conducted by medical professionals. Barcodes have been used extensively in labeling of laboratory specimens with the aim of reducing the errors that are brought about by testing of wrong samples. The mistakes that come about by misidentification have been cut drastically by the barcode technology in health facilities. Barcode technology has received positive sentiments from both patients and medical practitioners as it has reduced the baggage that comes about with identification of a specimen which is time-consuming and the reduction of time brought about by the testing and treatment of the patients.

Patient identification. Barcode technology has played a significant role in ensuring the results of patients’ information are accurate and reliable during and after testing (Khammarnia, Kassani, and Eslahi, 2015). Patients are often given wrists bands in hospitals that help in identification of patients, by giving details on the patients’ medical records in healthcare facilities through the barcode numbers.

Sterilization and surgical instrument identification. Barcodes help in identification of the information of surgical procedures and surgical kits (Yao, Chu, and Li, 2012). Barcodes have reduced errors that arise due to the wrong utilization of surgical kits or the surgical procedures. Barcodes can identify surgical equipment that undergone sterilization.

Explain how the initiative transformed your organization

The barcode has revolutionized the healthcare facility in our healthcare organization. Barcode technology through the use of barcode numbers has made the work of our nurses easier (Yao, Chu, and Li, 2012). Nurses can quickly identify the patients that require specialized medication through the use of the barcode numbers (Khammarnia, Kassani, and Eslahi, 2015). Barcode scanners can provide the relevant information on the of the patients thus reducing the burden of work of nurses and medical professionals thus decreasing time wastage. The errors brought about by wrong medication in our health facilities have dropped significantly. The barcode scanners can identify the equipment and drugs that are relevant to treat a patient as the barcode scanners can detect the medication and give the relevant information on the pill.

The barcode has revolutionized our laboratory services. Barcode technology can identify the specimen of the patient through the labeling of the specimen using barcode numbers. Barcode scanners can locate the relevant sample that is up for testing the laboratory technicians. Barcodes like in other organizations can provide accurate information that can be relied upon by the management of the organization.

Barcode technology has played a significant role in inventory control in our healthcare facility. Barcode technology has for many years the inventory stock systems for many organizations (Yao, Chu, and Li, 2012). Barcode technology helps significantly in inventory management. Barcode technology work in such a way that it records the inventory through barcode numbers and whenever the stock is removed from the stores or warehouses, the bar code scanners take the record. The barcode scanners have ensured to dealing with inaccurate stock evaluation and theft of inventory by mischievous employees.

The health facility has been customer-centric. The health facility has maintained this trait by ensuring that in use of digital channels in the provision of healthcare services to its patients’.
