Metaethics is a sub-branch of ethics which is concerned with studying the status, foundations and scope of an ethical issue, terms or words (Forcehimes, 2015). Metaethics can also be viewed as the study of moral thought and moral language in trying to show what morality actually is.

Metaethics and Poverty

In general, poverty refers to the lack of money and material possession or the inability to access essentials to manage a minimum standard way of living (Taylor & Lybbert, 2015). Ethics tries to devise ways necessary for handling and combating poverty. On the other hand, metaethics explores the strategies brought forward on dealing with poverty. It is ethical for countries which are wealthy to give aids to countries which are poor in monetary value or in material form. It is also an obligation of citizens from wealthy nations to reduce on their expenditures and donate part of their wealth to less privileged citizens. However, in most cases citizens from the wealthy nations do very little in reducing poverty.

Metaethics will examine a case in which a person is out for lunch then suddenly comes across a child or family which is at the verge of starving. It will be ethical for such a person to forgo his or her lunch and get the child or the family something to eat. In a case of helping a starving child or a starving family, the virtue of generosity is upheld. Generosity refers to the act of being kind, selfless and giving to others. In dealing with poverty, social activism should be applied. Social activism refers to the move towards creating a change in a society or in a work place. Another ethical way to approach poverty is by ensuring there is sustainable development in the communities. Sustainable developments are based on economic development without the depletion of available natural resources.
