According to Raja (2017), public speaking is an illustrious method of establishing personal growth on numerous levels, because enhancing communication skills are useful in almost every aspect of life. The main five advantages of why people develop public speaking skills include: for personal gratification, to expand the professional network, to establish critical thinking skills, to increase self-confidence, and to develop leadership qualities (Raja, 2017). My motivations for developing public speaking skills include: to build self-confidence and overcome the fear of public speaking since I tend to develop anxiety during public speaking. The second reason is to fine-tune my nonverbal and verbal skills during speeches and, lastly, to help me to develop my leadership qualities as an aspiring leader.

I have had various past experiences with public speaking begining with the bad experiences. During a class presentation, I was overburdened with fear, and I was unable to coherently or audibly conduct my presentation. In a separate incident, when I was reciting a poem to my class, I started feeling anxious and sweaty, and I only managed to recite the poem facing the ground until it was over. Finally, sometime back, I was called to give a thanksgiving prayer after a church function, and I could only stammer during the prayer. Some good experiences with public speaking are that after those experiences, I was able to receive encouragement and support from friends who motivated me to work on my skills. Also, after the class presentation, I got applause from my classmates which helped develop more confidence. In addition, public speaking enabled me to create more networks of friends.

The things I like about public speaking are the platform it provides for a person to express themselves and to build their confidence. Also, I like public speaking because it enables a person to influence the world around them (Raja, 2017). Finally, I enjoy public speaking because it allows a person to develop critical thinking skills, which is one of its primary benefits. My dislikes include the negative criticism one may receive, the fear public speaking generates, and sometimes lack attention from the audience. My public speaking goals include: to learn how to keep my emotions in check and keep calm during public speaking; to learn how to deliver a summarized speech without excluding the primary areas, and to learn to accept constructive criticism.

Outline

Some of my strengths comprise:

The ability to deliver speech coherently and audibly

The ability to properly research on the topic before conducting a public speech

The ability to connect with my audience

Delivering a summarized speech

Keeping my emotions in check
