Madama Butterfly

The mood expressed by the Puccini aria “Un bel di vedremo” is a nostalgic one. The song is sung by Madama Butterfly as she ponders on the return of Pinkerton, her absent love. It is three years down the line and Butterfly is yet to see her husband who is in an official duty as a US naval officer.

The depiction of the landscape and the forest helps in creating a nostalgic mood. They amplify the meaning that indeed the husband is far away from the Butterfly. While singing, Butterfly is dressed in a piece of cloth. The main theme of the song is to express a sense of love which is traditionally represented by the red color.

The believability of the scene is boosted by several factors. The first one is the mood expressed by the butterfly. The emotions appear to be genuine as expected for somebody who has not seen her lover for close to three years. The loneliness seen in the environment helps in promoting a sense of desertion thus enhancing believability.

Miss Saigon

Schonberg and Boublil utilize the medium of musical theatre to provide an interpretation of Puccini’s “Un bel di Vedremo.” The incorporation of music and dance remains on of the most significant highlights of the musical theatre. The addition of visual effects that go hand-in-hand with the thematic representation of the music also adds to its success. In musical theatres, entertainment is regarded as one of the primary aims. The entertainment value created through movements and tonal variation on the theatre cannot be overemphasized.

The similar theme or concept from the two arias is about love. However, it is an unconventional representation of love where the women suffer from the emotional effects of abandonment. The Asian women fall in love with American lovers who due to their professional commitments, have little time for them. As a result, they end up remaining alone, hurting, and hoping that their lovers will be back as soon as possible.

Ritual, Social, Ballet, and Modern Dance

Ballet applies meticulous techniques such as pointe work, precise movements, and high extensions. Modern dance, on the other hand, goes against the strict constraints created by classical ballet. The movements are free flowing with choreography that lacks any meaningful structure.

Ballet emerged in the 15 th century. It went on to be adopted as a sophisticated dance move in France and Russia. The curriculum is defined. Most fundamentally, the movements applied in training are the same ones utilized on stage. On the contrary, the modern dance began much later in the 20 th century. It not only calls for more freedom but also the use of gravity.

From a general point of view, ballet is primarily a slow dancing technique. On the other hand, modern dance is characterized by fast movements.

Singing in the Rain

Singing in the rain can be categorized as a musical comedy film that stars Gene Kelly. Throughout the film, several musical elements are evident. The primary examples include setting, sound, costumes, makeup, photography, and body movements.

Kelly uses several dance aspects that could be associated with the ballet, his meticulous techniques, precise movements, and high extensions are all characteristic of the ballet.

From the modern dance, Kelly seems to draw the essence of speed and the presence of choreography that lacks a definite structure.

The geometry can be described as linear based on the patterns that Kelly and the rest of the crew depict. The movements establish a definite pattern with accurate angles.

Based on all the items identified including sound, makeup, choreography, and the two dance techniques, this dance style qualifies as a musical theatre.
