Caring for the sick is an important part of life as it ensures the recovery and healing of patients. Nurses play a big role as caregivers to patients to ensure that patients get quality and adequate care. A personal philosophy of nursing is important for nurses to enable them to have a guideline and basis for their profession. My personal philosophy of nursing will be a motivating factor in the field of nursing. This paper explores my personal philosophy of nursing which I use as a registered nurse. The personal philosophy will involve an exploration of historical, ethical, and political factors that affect the philosophy and consider the beliefs of Jean Watson.

My personal philosophy of nursing incorporates compassion and caring for the wellbeing of other individuals as someone in my own family. Children have dreams and aspirations of what they want to become when they grow up. Some want to be doctors, lawyers, firefighters, and teachers. My desire as a child was never to become a nurse. However, I always found myself working in jobs that involved the medical field. I became increasingly drawn to helping people and was compassionate in helping others. It was later when I realized that I should take advantage of my passion and experience in the medical field. Nursing thus became my number one career.

One of the key aspects that makes me enjoy nursing is the fact that it involves caring for others. Being passionate in the field of nursing, I will assess the conditions of patients keenly with the intention of developing a care plan that should ensure recovery. I will collaborate with healthcare providers such as doctors to ensure that patients get the best possible treatment and that they have a good plan of care. The plan of care will be implemented after close monitoring of patients. Additionally, I will instruct and teach patients on the need and importance of maintaining good health. One of the key goals of my work as a nurse is to ensure that I will tend to the emotional and psychological needs of patients and their families.

Historical Factors

Historical factors shape my personal philosophy of nursing by considering the historical factors that have ensured the success of the nursing profession. Throughout history, women have been the primary providers nursing. They did this through nurturing of family members, carrying for the infants and children, and taking care of those that were ill. The type of care provided related to humanistic caring nurturing, and comfort. This relates to my personal philosophy of nursing since I will apply a humanistic caring, comfort, and support in my nursing profession. Another historical aspect of nursing was religious views based on love and the story of the Good Samaritan. My personal philosophy of nursing will reflect a high degree of care and level. Patients will be treated with equality and love.

Ethical Factors

My nursing practice will entail a degree of autonomy and collaborate with doctors, healthcare providers, and family members before deciding on care. I will seek to defend the dignity of those under my care by responding to patients in a way that shows respect to patients and respect their autonomous choices. I will respect the wishes and the decisions of patients even when I do not fully agree with their choices.

I will seek to incorporate a high degree of confidentiality throughout my interaction with the patient. Confidentiality will be achieved by ensuring that information about an individual is only shared with other individuals after the person of the individual (McDermott-Levy, 2018). I will also seek to be truthful to patients regarding their condition and provide a balance to ensure that it is done lovingly and does not cause distress to the patient.

Ethical principles that will guide my practice include non-maleficence and beneficence. Non-maleficence will involve remaining competent in my nursing field and being ready to report any form of suspected abuse to patients. Observing beneficence will enable me to have compassion and to take the necessary positive actions that will be beneficial to others through the basis of the desire to do good. I will also maintain the principle of justice by treating patients fairly and equally.

Political Factors

Political factors influence nursing include legislative actions that govern the operations of the nursing profession. In order to ensure that I deliver quality care, I will ensure that I have adequate knowledge of the legislative process that governs the nursing profession. Apart from simply focusing on clinical care, I will be up to date and knowledgeable about various public policies that could affect my delivery of care. My nursing profession will be enhanced by joining a professional nursing organization that would keep nurses up to date with various policies, politics, and legislative processes in nursing.

Jean Watson’s Philosophy

One of the main themes presented in Watson’s theory is viewing the human being as valuable beings that should be taken care of, nurtured, understood, and respected. The theory will form the basis of my nursing philosophy through ensuring that I care for the needs of the patient. According to the theory, both the nurse and the client should be active participants of the care and healing process (Sitzman, 2018). I will be able to ensure that I get involved in the healing process and develop a human relationship with the patient. I will ensure that the delivery of service is based on humanistic values where caring is the central focus.

In conclusion, my personal philosophy of nursing is based on the need to provide care and help to others. The passion for helping others developed right from a young age where I was involved in offering help and assistance. I intend to embody the historical, ethical, and political factors that affect the field of nursing in creating my philosophy. Jean Watson’s philosophy on nursing through humanistic values and care as the central focus will be the center of my personal nursing philosophy.
