My experience with the mass media occurred when I was 13 years old and watched an action movie which involved a lot of gun violence and hurting of other people. Seeing people killing each other was traumatic to me and made me develop psychological problems. Whenever I was alone, all I could see were the images of people whom I watched being killed in cold blood in the movie. It took me through a life of confusion and wrong perceptions about movies, thinking that the killings were real. It took up to one year before I could understand that it was a movie and that the killings were not real. Despite having gotten over the trauma, it affected me mentally as I grew up.
Another experience that I had with mass media was when I watched a television program that was teaching the young people about the dangers of drugs. The program was named “create awareness about the harmful effects of drugs.” As I watched this program, I learned a lot of things about the negative effects of drugs that I never knew before. The major drugs discussed were bang and alcohol, and the host of the show was offering a lesson for the young people why they need to stay away from such drugs due to bot the health, social and psychological effects it has on them. This program provided me with a positive lesson about drugs that have always helped me live a drug-free life. This was a positive influence of mass media on me. It shows the role of mass media on educating young people about various issues in life (Riff et al., 2019).
