Being of an African origin, I would almost naturally root for nurturing personalities and traits; an achieved status. This is the personality that is groomed and could be drawn from many points, including the attributes one is born with. What one learns in life is quite significant over the ascribed status (what one is born with) because it teaches one how to adapt to an environment. This status takes into account the surroundings and the people in it into consideration when informing an individual on how they should interact in the given context. In simple terms, an achieved status is critical in impacting adaptation tactics onto one, which might not be the case for an ascribed status. This is because in most cases the ascribed status takes a more general approach in informing personal attributes such as kindness, or loyalty, which are not specific to any given setting. However, I like to believe that these two statuses can be fused to form the master status. This status implies applying the ascribed and the achieved status for the holistic growth and adaptation into a given setting. In this scenario, one does not have to give up what they identify with as their personalities to fit in, but instead would only have to add a little bit of character to enrich their status set. For instance, as a person grows, they go through the different stages of life and would have to interact with people on different levels. At one point one might be a worker, a daughter or son, a friend, and a student, all that at the same time. Because all these exhibit different environments, it is essential that one finds ways to develop their status set in such a manner that allows them to embrace their personalities drawn from the ascribed and achieved statuses without losing sight of either at any given environment.
The assumption, "just born that way" is given when people do not want to take responsibility for their actions or make an extra effort to fit into an environment. For example, some people would find it hard to blend into different environments apart from the ones they have grown accustomed to because of their ascribed status and refuse to embrace diversity. This could be in such instances as when faced with cultural, or religious diversities that exhibit values that are different from what one is used to, or identifies with, leading to role conflict. Role conflict is when a person is faced with incompatible demands that make it extremely hard for them to comply with the prevailing demands while upholding the values they believe in. Rather than find ways to balance these two worlds, some people would forego the prevalent social factors at the expense of the values and teachings they were born with. However, it is important to stress the role that social learning and socialization play in encouraging the achieved status. It plays a significant role in overcoming what people are born with, in the sense that it breaks the role strain by emphasizing the different approaches to given roles. A role strain typically occurs when an individual is faced with a single role having multiple statuses. I this case it may be difficult for the individual to focus on the tasks or the environmental factors pushing through a single role. However, the incorporation of the achieved status into the ascribed status enable the individual to prioritize their roles or the environmental factors thus easing the tension created by tackling each force independently, based on their urgency or importance. In this regard, socialization plays a leading role in pushing for the diversity of thoughts and actions, thus breaking the beliefs and approaches one is born with.
