Introduction

The article is an examination of the significance that the media has on the racism topic. The writer emphasizes that African Americans have always been painted by the media as savage and ignorant perpetuating racism within society. Most notably, the writer identifies the use of films as one of the ways that the media propagated negative ethnicity towards men. Furthermore, the films adopted white artists (who painted themselves black) to play the roles of blacks showing that black people could not even represent themselves and as such needed the white people to represent them (Kassia, 2015).

Conceptual framework

To gain an understanding of the impact that the media has on systems, beliefs and values the writer chooses the Social Learning Theory noting that it supports the rights and responsibilities principles useful in social work. Using the theory helps people learn that their understanding of the rights, as well as responsibilities they have, helps to promote equality and justice subsequently being used to counter racism.

Findings

The author finds out that there is considerable use of the word "black" to bring the notion of racial identity in play in comparison to the use of the word "white" (Kassia, 2015). Additionally, there is a tendency of criminalizing black men in cases of criminal incidents by showing them as violent noting that the media has played a critical role in painting African Americans as having negative characteristics. On the other hand, white police officers who commit atrocities towards black people have their actions justified under all circumstances.

Personal notes

Kassia notes that there is a negative notion spread by the media about African Americans. The media achieves this through constantly providing wider coverage for the few wrong things that a section of the black community is involved in as compared to the many wrong things that their white counterparts engage in. Subsequently, the media becomes overly successful in promoting racism.
