Why do doctors measure reflexes during a diagnostic exam?

Doctors perform reflex tests during a diagnostic exam to check the integrity of the spinal reflex arc. These tests help to give insights into the nervous system integrity of a patient at different levels. Doctors normally conduct the reflex tests of various muscles because every location may communicate a message concerning the health of various parts of the nerves as well as the spinal cord. It is done as part of the neurological exam, either mini-exam, which is quickly done to check the spinal cord integrity or a complete exam done to diagnose the location and presence of neuromuscular disease or injury of the spinal cord.

There are three results which may come from the tests. A diminished/absent response is referred to as hyporeflexia, a normal response which considered normal, and an over-reactive response called hyperreflexia. According to the National Institute for Health, the latter shows a lesion in the reflex under the spine while the former represents an issue with the reflex arc itself.

What is the importance of a yearly eye exam?

Regardless of physical condition or age, an annual eye exam is important for the maintenance of the general health of the body. The eye exam is different from eye screening, and it involves a comprehensive examination by an optometrist or ophthalmologist, which assists not only in evaluating visual acuity but also in early detection of eye diseases such as amblyopia, strabismus, detached retina and glaucoma. Besides, the eye doctor can also check for serious health issues such as the risk of stroke, diabetes and high blood pressure based on delicate blood vessels appearance and other structures within the eye.

For instance, diabetes can cause the leakage or bleeding of small blood vessels in the eye and macula swelling, which can cause vision loss. Therefore, it is important for people to carry out a regular annual eye exam to help treat these chronic diseases and other eye diseases before they worsen. For children, the regular eye check can play a significant role in learning and normal development.
