The US Census bureau projected the New York City population at 8,398,748 which shows an increase from the April 2010 census by 223615. This increase was, however, marked in the immediate years following the census and recent decline in population is being experienced. The majority of the population is female and the number of people below 18 years makes up 21 % of the population. Poverty levels in the city stand at 19% and the number of people who are not in retirement yet lack medical cover makes up for 11% of the population ( New York city, New York., 2019 ). The percentage female population in the city is more than the country’s average female population, whereas the population under 18 years and that with a medical cover remain the same. The amount of the population above 65 years differs slightly with the city having a lesser amount. The white race is predominant in the city as it is in the country (which has 60% of the population as white alone). However, the white population in the city is less than the national population since only 32% is white, while African American and Hispanic population recording more presence than in the national population percentage (United States., 2019). The education statistics between the country and the city match although a larger percentage is recorded in the city with respect to higher education.

Due to racial disparities in the US healthcare, diabetes is likely to be a health concern in New York, given the increased population of African Americans and Hispanics. Additionally, diabetes is shown to be more prevalent in low and medium income socioeconomic environments that means the large population of the city that lives with less than average income is more susceptible to the condition. Similarly, the prevalence of HIV/AIDS has also shown a strong correlation to low income environments and more common in colored communities. When this is coupled with the infection rates among youth, it is clear that the city is more prone to HIV related issues. The increase of cardiovascular infections is shown to be strongly related to age advancements, which would mean that this might not be a public health issue facing the city. However, change in lifestyle conditions has meant that chances increase with lower income socioeconomic environments (due to poorer health policies and information) and thus poses a health challenge given the amount of low to middle income populations in the city.
