With the continued advancement in technology, most of the focus has been on how technology has eased and improved everyday life. The smartphone has especially been given high levels of attention since it is a gadget owned by many people (both adults and children). There are many undeniable positive benefits the smartphone in everyday lives, the core being the increased ability to communicate and socialize with others. The use of the smartphone as a communication and socialization tool has, however, created a zero-sum game situation. The gains for outside circles of friends, workmates, schoolmates, and acquaintance has been the loss of the immediate family. Before the advent of smartphones, dinner time enabled family members to socialize, find out more about each other, and grow even more intimate together. The assumption, therefore, is that if families can put away their smartphones during dinner time, it can increase their relationship and intimacy.
Methods
The method of collection of data will be survey research. These survey questionnaires will be distributed to my friends through email. The use of survey research through email is put since it collects quantitative data that can easily be analyzed through trends and patterns identified therein. The questions will be close-ended. I will give them a one-week prior breakdown of the research and ask them to request for everyone to put aside their smartphone during dinner time. It is prudent to do this so that by the time I distribute the closed-ended survey questions to them, they will have firsthand information and data. Additionally, this will also help in ensuring that the data is objective and authentic, hence increasing the reliability of the final research results, analysis, and recommendations.
