To most people, the Bible seems to be a presentation of a preeminent chronicle of the world’s earliest struggles. However, to others, it defines a thin mess of the mythological events in history. Darren Aronofsky creates a fantasy that embodies each of these perspectives. Darren tries to express history in this film as a disaster. As the film is ongoing, Noah seems to take liberties that are sure to make the viewers who are oblivious to Sunday school and church teachings discover the gist. In this film, one can see that Noah is a man that becomes the reason why the Creator spares the earth as a result of the sins of Cain and Seth. Noah comes to learn of the earth’s destruction by “the creator” through a vision. Noah receives news that only his family and two pairs of each species on the planet may survive. Noah also gets an antagonist in this film who viewers see as the human stowaway who tries to surpass the Creator’s will to restart civilization. If you analyze the two characters that are Noah in the Bible, and the film Noah, one will see there is a slight difference. People see the Noah in the Bible as a man who is weak, and no one takes seriously. People trivialize the Bible Noah because people think he is too good. On the other hand, the film’s Noah is a smart and thoughtful man with the zest and determination to work and save humanity. As for Methuselah, the film shows his character before he dies while in the Bible Methuselah is already dead before the floods begin. In the film, Methuselah is a magician who knows more about drugs and herbs that can cure infertility. The film also tries to depict him as a man people go to for a piece of laughter. Also in the Bible, we do not hear or see anything to do with Noah’s grandfather, but in the film, Noah does have a granddad. As for the ark animals, the film shows how the creator puts the animals to sleep autonomously, but in the Bible, we do not see that. One can see a big difference in the characters of Shem, Ham, and Japhet because in the Bible they do not have as much involvement. In the film, one can see that these three characters have wives and are adults. The wives are descendants of Cain and not Seth. The film also takes of a woman Ila who is not anywhere in the Bible. In the Bible, we see Ham looking for a wife as in opposition to the film and him having a wife already.

After seeing the differences between the characters, there are also other difference and similarities between these two stories. The differences and similarities are the narratives and the thematic ones. When it comes to the ark, the similarity here is that the structure of it is a giant parallel rectangle that is wooden and tar covers it to make the ark waterproof. As for the difference, the Bible shows how Noah and his three sons built the ark while in the film the building of the ark is a joint job. Another similarity in these two stories is the existence of “watchers.” In the film, the watchers are guardians who seem to light up the world as the Bible’s sons of God in Genesis 6. The big difference between the watchers is that in the Bible God curses the creatures because of their desire to try and bring downfall to earth. Also, the film shows that they help in the building of the ark and that they do not have the interest to take the human’s wives as the Bible states. As for the flooding, the major similarity these two stories have is the existence of water both falling from the sky and having subterranean water coming from beneath the earth. The one difference between the floods is that in the Bible readers can see that Noah is safe inside the ark when the floods start but in the film there is some star action from Noah as he is trying to fight people off. As for the dreams, in this case, there is only a difference since in the Bible we see God speaking directly to Noah, but in the film we see Noah getting a vision about the flood. About God’s punishment, we can see that in both stories mankind is evil because people do whatever it is that they want without having the slightest care about the consequences of their actions. We can see in both stories that the people are violent and do not believe in God. The big difference between these two stories is that the film focuses more on the sexual misconduct too much while the Bible does not speak too much about sexuality.
Besides the thematic and narrative differences, there are also some religious differences. When it comes to the Creator being present, the film shows that God is silent and Noah is alone, and most of the time he tries to be the one deciphering cryptic visions from God. However, in the Bible one can see that God walks hand in hand with Noah through the prayers and God also speaking to Noah literally. The film shows how Noah takes matters to his own hands and does what he thinks is right while in the Bible Noah first consults God before taking any step. Another major spiritual difference between these two stories is that for the film, Darren claims that the universe contains nothing in the beginning while in the Bible it clearly says that in the beginning there is the Word and the Word is God. Now, in the film, Darren seems to exaggerate who the serpent is by giving the creature glowing skin that makes anyone who touches it to having glowing skin. However, there is nowhere in the Bible where serpent gets to have skin that glows. The film seems to be more of an occult rather than a description of what the Bible shows Satan. The last spiritual difference that one sees from these two stories is the existence of fancy technology. So, if one knows about 2700 B.C. then they know that at that time a more fashion sense including the gear and the clothes would have been an exaggeration. The film shows how fancy Noah is especially with the boots that he is wearing. The boots in this film seem to be too stylish making the film seem too much ahead of time. There is also a chimney in the ark which obviously cannot be a depiction of the construction that underwent during the 2700 B.C. Even with the research that the film did, it is clear that Darren brings more action to the table than the right amount of simplicity the film requires and needs because it is never that serious.
In conclusion, therefore, the film is fascinating from a cinematic point of view, but somehow it does not deliver the biblical adaption. The film also interprets some of the biblical aspects in a different manner from the actual biblical context. One will notice new aspects in the film that are nowhere close to what the Bible shows. One can see how Noah keeps questioning his worth and comparing himself to other people. Also, it is unfortunate that the film contains some modicum surprises because no one in the film ever mentions God and it seems the film concentrates more on earthly traditions rather than the Biblical one. The way Darren interprets the character of Noah from that one of the Bible is quite different. It seems that while creating the film, the addition of drama and a few extra bogus lines is an indication that the directors did not think the story in the Bible is enough. To most people, the chapters 6-9 in Genesis are entertaining and deep, and they do not have to have extra moral quandaries and fight sequences to become amazing or entertaining. Sadly, the addition of too many ingredients makes the stories a lot different from the way it should be from the start. However, it is a good film that worth watching because it brings people closer to the understanding of the things happening before Christ. Finally, the film is a creative work that will make any human oblivious to the Bible aware of it.
