Part 1

The American Nurses Association outlines position statements which are quite relevant to the nursing practice, social concerns, and health policies which have significant impacts on the health of families and patients. Position statements in this regard act as a guide to the profession, amplify the nursing practice views and provide viable education for decision makers as well as consumers.

The position statement I chose is on abuse of prescription drugs.

Synopsis: American Nurses Association strongly opposes incompetent and fraudulent prescription activities by health providers as well as misuse of the drugs by nurses. The association promotes a comprehensive pharmacology education for nurses in all setups to ensure that drugs are prescribed in a safe and appropriate manner. Further, the association outline that nurses subject to prescription privileges should have some sort of education. The education should be generally on the misuse, abuse and addictive nature of drugs. In addition, nurses should be educated on the vulnerabilities of special populations who are at higher risks of drug dependence. There are legal provisions which nurses should be aware of such as accountability with regard to nurse assessment, evaluation, and intervention. Such an education should be related to the illicit, legal and prescription drugs. The nurses should also be educated on the prescription practices and the management of substances which have the potential of altering natural substances including hormone and steroids.

I agree with this position due to the fact that nurse practitioners have the responsibility of ensuring positive outcomes for patients. In this regard, these provisions as postulated by the American Nurses Association are quite in order. Nurses ought to understand the need to administer drugs in a manner to preserve and boost life and not for any other purposes which might turn abusive in nature (American Nurses Association, 1991).

Part 2

The American Nurses Association action center is actually packed with information than I thought. One piece of information that I found in the review is that cases of nurse abuse are quite alarming. It is estimated that nurses are more predisposed to violence and other forms of abuse more than police officers or even prison guards. This is shocking in the sense that the people tasked with the responsibility of saving lives are in turn the most unsafe. In this regard, I join in the movement calls for the Congress to help in putting an end to nurse abuse.

For years, the American Nurses Association has been at the forefront of the fight for a better work environment for nurses. The information from the action center points out that one in every four nurses has been assaulted at work. The American Nurses Association should lead in the change process as it has done over the years. There should be an awareness created regarding this issue and there should as well be a push for legislative and administrative solutions.

Part 3

There are a number of health care topics of concern. In one way or the other, the American Nurses Association places significant emphasis on making healthcare as dependable as possible. One of the issues I can point out is that there is too much unnecessary care.

Key message “Basically, overuse and unnecessary care contribute to about half of all the health care costs. This is in the tune of billions of dollars. Experts further outline that there is another half a trillion annually which in essence bring about lost productivity and disability”

Sound bite: There is too much unnecessary car!

Dear Sir

The unnecessary access to healthcare has become a rampant issue in health care and in essence a nuisance. The most annoying aspect is that a number of individuals have access to health care even when they do not need the same. Early elective deliveries, for example, have been on the rise.

Unnecessary is already one of the greatest problems in the nursing practice since the excess resources pumped in this area should be channeled to other areas requiring significant attention. Furthermore, the in excesses of this kind can be redirected towards helping the poor.

Part 4

The New York State Nurses Association has in recent times started a campaign to demand safe staffing and fair funding. This campaign comes in the wake of a staffing crisis which has hit hard the New York City health and hospitals (PR Newswire, 2019).

Synopsis: The campaign primarily focuses on raising awareness of the current crisis which has hit the staffing sector in New York City. There is a need to ensure that there are safe staffing levels to provide all New York nurses with appropriate resources to outline their jobs effectively. Safe staffing is about saving lives and access to safe; quality and affordable health care should be a priority in every neighborhood (Cheung, Lee, & Yip, 2018). Health is wealth and there is a need to safeguard the healthcare system by addressing issues such as underpaid and undervalued nurses.
