Given that nurses comprise the largest workforce in the healthcare profession, they are usually at the frontline of disaster management in their respective workstations ( Gebbie & Qureshi, 2012). This is due to their possession of innovative ideas and solutions. In this case, if I were the nurse leader responsible for proposing a disaster preparedness plan, I would ensure that our health care organization adopts crisis standards of care that would enhance the training of nurses on some of the unique disaster nursing skills. Such skills would include efficient resource allocation amid scarcity and reverse triage among others that would be imperative in ensuring that they provide the most appropriate form of are as long as it is required.
In addition, I would propose that our organization provides educational opportunities for nurses in order to hone their skills in regards to the public health emergency preparedness that would come in handy during times of crisis. Besides, as a nurse leader I would encourage that nurses engage in volunteer agencies that would offer them myriad opportunities to participate in disaster response. Given that the volunteer healthcare professionals play significant roles to meet surge capacity needs in times of emergencies and crisis, the involvement of nurses in such agencies would enhance their preparedness to respond during disasters and emergencies (Veenema et al., 2016)

Additionally, given that disasters and emergencies response call for a multi-disciplinary approach, I would enhance that all nurses are taken through the basics of interprofessional team approaches to disaster. This would be in addition to developing comprehensive and effective communication competencies that are essential in such times ( Saliba, Buchanan & Kington, 2004). Such competencies are particularly important when it comes the development of communication messages intended to educate the public in terms of issues such as changes to the availability of health care services among others.
