The nurses and physicians receive training in delivering high-quality care or support to the sick individuals in the community. It is the responsibility of the doctors and nurses to provide education to the community on the proper health practices. The doctors and practitioners delegate duties to nurses on supervising treatment and medical process. The primary responsibilities of nurses portray their support towards the patients and families. The paper will focus on the major factors that prompted Bouldin and Hall-Long to advocate for the patients, the challenges and a personal reflection.

Drivers for Advocacy and Factors that influenced them to become Advocates

An advocate encounters challenges when addressing the issues of the public or community. Many people try to advocate for the rights of individuals but get discouraged due to the challenges they face. Marilyn Waugh Bouldin overcame the advocacy challenges when addressing the issues of the patients. Bouldin had the passion and ambitions of becoming a nurse as well as a leader in the community since her childhood. Mentors are essential in one's life because they provide support in achieving dreams or goals (Bisognano and Kenney, 2012). Bouldin's friends were her main drivers of nursing advocacy. Bouldin received support from her friends when advocating for the patient’s issues. Bouldin’s friends come from her community, and it was an advantage because they provided full support. Bouldin contended for a political position to represent her community after getting encouragement from friends. The executive committee respected Bouldin and supported her to advocate for the patient’s issues. Bouldin had retired and got an opportunity to address the patient’s concerns.

The first woman to be chosen as the legislator of Delaware General Meeting is Bethany Hall-Long. Hall-Long was a nurse and a member of the university faculty. She realized that the assembly needed an expert on health (Benton, Maaitah, & Gharaibeh, 2017). Hall-Long did voluntary work in a non-profit institution and civic organization. The voluntary work boosted her political occupation because she gained experience on national regulations. Hall-Long got an opportunity to interact with federal agents and the managers of the NHA (National Health Association) during the voluntary work. Hall-Long’s voluntary position opined her chances of contesting for a political position in the national assembly. Hall-Long had mentors who assisted her to achieve the goals of the nursing and political career (Benton, Maaitah, & Gharaibeh, 2017). The primary driver that prompted Hall-Long to pursue the political career was to improve the living standards of people in the community. Hall-Long realized that some individuals lack necessities. Hall-Long was determined to address the challenges of the individuals in the assembly.

Challenges Faced by the Advocates

Bouldin faced humiliation when advocating for the patient’s rights. For example, the state executives told Bouldin that she did not deserve the political position. Bouldin did not have campaigning skills, and this affected her public image. Further, Bouldin was not aggressive in delivering speeches. She did not have adequate finances to fund the campaigning activities (Bisognano and Kenney, 2012). The editor at the women’s league committee did not endorse Bouldin but appreciated the presence of the candidate with the high financial status (Bisognano and Kenney, 2012). Bouldin was intimidated after the state officials requested for additional documents when campaigning. The executive committee was against the ideas of Bouldin. She did not dare to address the rights of the individuals efficient ly (Hassmiller and Combes, 2012)

Hall-Long had contested for the legislator position in the assembly for several times. During the previous election, a man was elected to the legislative position (Benton, Maaitah, & Gharaibeh, 2017). Hall-Long had to spare time to carry out the campaigns for her to win. She spent little time with her family.

Personal Reflection and Advocacy Goals

It is not easy to address the rights of individuals in a modern community where there is low support. Individuals decide to discuss the rights of the public for different reasons. Firstly, people choose the path for advocacy to address the needs of low-profile individuals in the community. Secondly, some individuals take part in advocacy because it was their ambitions since childhood. People are determined to address the rights of the population due to the support from friends or the people they meet in their careers. For instance, Bouldin and Hall-Long pursued their political careers due to support from their friends. They had the passion of becoming leaders or addressing the rights of the public since their childhood. Besides, Bouldin's and Hall-Long's friends convinced them to contest for political positions to represent their communities. A political career has various challenges such as inadequate finances, intimidation, and opposition from other candidates.

My experiences as a community leader are similar to those of Bouldin and Hall-Long. I was a student leader in university, but I encountered challenges. The main drivers for my leadership position in the university were my friends. My friends encouraged me that I could become a leader and represent students from our community. I did not take my leadership position at university seriously. After completing my course, I took part in voluntary and charity activities in our community.

I could comprehend the challenges that people faced in the community. For example, I was aware that some people could not access medical services of the Medicaid system due to inadequate finances. Just like Bouldin, I was passionate about improving the lives of low-profile individuals in our community. I had to contest for the position of the legislator in the assembly to get a chance to address the challenges of the public. I encountered various difficulties when battling for the position of the community leader. I did not have adequate finances to fund the campaigns as compared to my counterparts. I appreciate my position because I can advocate for the needs of the people in my community.

I will use respectful and assertive communication to enhance my advocacy skills. As a result, the members of the legislature will implement my ideas and improve the lives of community members. The communication skills will improve my service towards the community. I will seek support from the legislators or community member when necessary. I will organize the activities or events in the community effectively. Further, I will determine the problems in our community and address them to the assembly.

In conclusion, an advocate faces various challenges such as lack of finances, hostility, and intimidation from the counterparts. The primary driver for a politician should be addressing the challenges of the low-profile individuals in the community. The poor people access limited health and education facilities. I was inspired to address the challenges of the poor people in our community. An individual needs to consider the views of other people on their leadership capabilities. It is the responsibility of every leader to advocate for the rights of the public to improve their welfare.
