The Nurse of Future (NOF) nursing core competencies are all inclined toward attaining a singular goal, that is, a competent and knowledgeable future nurse. As healthcare providers, our main objective is providing the best care for our patients and ensuring their safety. As such, this objective can be achieved more easily through continued learning of the ten competencies. Moreover, the best way of introducing the ten competencies into nursing care is well captured by the NOF core competency model. The model offers a standardized and structured approach to learning these competencies.
Although the competencies are interconnected, I think the communication and evidence-based practice are the two most significant competencies to my future nursing practice. Indeed, for exceptional patient-centered care to be achieved, health professionals need to practice effective communication as well as collaboration ( American Nurses Association , 2015). A career in nursing involves encountering so many people, for instance, doctors, therapists, patients, support staff, as well as patient’s relations. The way we communicate with these different groups of people differ significantly (Boykins, 2014). For example, if the communication involves a patient or their relations, the words need to elucidate the message to the patient, and medical jargon is avoided because its application is limited within the medical field. As such, the use of plain language is important because it makes the patient understand what is being said thus improving his/her health literacy (Boykins, 2014).

Moreover, evidence-based practice is very significant since things tend to evolve as time goes by. Application of an updated serene method of patient care will assist in the realization of improved outcomes. For example, it is the reason why technology used decades ago is rendered useless because patient care has evolved thus need for a technology upgrade. Since evidence-based practice time-sensitive, time becomes a barrier to its implementation (Harding et al., 2014). Therefore, discovering novel ways of better implementing evidence-based practice will significantly impact the quality of care received in healthcare systems.
Overall, the ten core competencies play a significant role in ensuring the preparation of a well-round nurse. Although all the ten are important, communication and evidence-based practice are the two competencies I think will play a significant role in my future career.
