A successful nursing home administrator must have proper communication skills with regard to both healthcare and business. Also, since they attend meetings with other administrators, communication skills will aid in conveying the necessary information. A nursing home administrator working for large homes must be effective in communication to avoid confusion among their staff.

Conflict resolution skills are essential for a nursing home administrator for them to effectively settle disputes among staff members. Typically, proper conflict resolution leaves each party satisfied. Hence, such a nursing home administrator will create a harmonious work environment. Furthermore, they might need to attend an interdisciplinary meeting with a patient’s family, therapists, and physicians. Hence, they should propel the meeting to come to a consensus where the actions taken after that would not be too harsh on any party. 

Flexibility for Change 

For a nursing home administrator to be successful, they must be flexible and be willing to make changes. One should take a different course of action, which would be an alteration from the routine procedures or activities. For instance, Trina Vines made remarkable changes when she took over as an administrator at the Oak Trace Care and Rehab Center in the previous four years. Consequently, the center has topped in performance (Alabama Nursing Home Association, 2019). Oak Trace Care and Rehab Center developed a unique quality of life for residents as well as improved health care programs. As such, the flexibility to embrace change is vital for a successful nursing home administrator. 

Knowledge in Business Principles 

A nursing home administrator can be successful if they possess expert knowledge of business principles. First, they must be good at preparing departmental budgets to ensure the sustainability of the facility and the people it serves (Tuten, 2019). Besides, the administrator must be knowledgeable of organizational behavior and resource management. Regarding organizational behavior, they will be able to empower people as well as their talents. In resource management, the administrator ensures that there are minimal wastages through accountability measures. 

Good Interpersonal Relations 

Nursing home administrators must have excellent interpersonal relations aimed at building positive relationships with their staff. Consequently, there will be enhanced cooperation with the team (Tuten, 2019). In many cases, a person with good relations encourages openness and the sharing of ideas in the facility. Thus, there would be team-oriented leadership aimed at similar goals.

Apart from the job description of a nursing home administrator, there are other factors which determine a successful administrator. They are related to their skills, leadership characteristics, as well as the opportunities and challenges they face. The skills essential for a nursing home administrator to be successful are communication skills and conflict resolution skills. Moreover, they should embrace flexibility geared toward change. Besides, he should possess excellent interpersonal relations for building positive relationships. Lastly, the administrator should possess knowledge in business principles like budget preparation and resource management.
