Describe your career path to your current position. Include information about education and experience

I have always had a passion for helping people and I knew from a very young age that I wanted to venture into nursing. I have also had an interest in computer science and information and therefore I tried to find out what job will cover both passions and I found Nursing Clinical Information Manager. So, immediately after completing my high school diploma/ GED, I joined Indiana University School of Medicine, Indiana, to pursue a bachelor’s degree of science in nursing. During my undergraduate studies, anatomy, chemistry, microbiology, pharmacology, and mental healthcare were some of the subjects I majored in. I then joined graduate level where I enrolled for a Master’s Degree in nursing in the same university. I took the NCLEX national licensure examination that is needed for an informatics nurse licensing. I am currently in the process of enrolling for a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program at one of the universities in the state. After my graduation, I joined the Indiana University Health University Hospital for an internship program that lasted for one year. Currently, I am an employee of the emergency medical associates (EMA) as the Clinical Information Manager. I am based in its headquarters in Parsippany, New Jersey.

Discuss the value of best evidence as a driving force in delivery of nursing care at your facility

Nurses and other healthcare practitioners use their level of expertise to find solutions to medical problems. However, in the recent past, healthcare systems have had to adopt innovative evidence based practice. Best evidence practice ensures that the nursing professionals are kept current and relevant. It helps in improvement of patient care and, as a result, reduces the healthcare costs and improves the clinical outcomes of the patients. Unfortunately, there are challenges involved. For example, the rate of acceptance and implementation is quite slow. Literature is produced on a monthly basis and this will mean that people in the nursing profession will have to invest a lot of their time to read and catch up with the latest research which is quite impossible considering the amount of time they spend at the workplace. Additionally, adoption of new technology and other important information requires investment of financial resources as well as time. This means that the hospital has to spend money for regular training of nurses and install new equipment so as to keep up with the new innovation.

What safeguards and decision making support tools are embedded in patient care technologies and information systems that support safe practices at your facility?

In EMA, like most emergency programs, we use Quick Response Codes to save lives. The company has introduced pilot programs to every agency they have in five states in the USA. The residents in the states are required to join a website and input their personal information including their medical history. They are then required to place code stickers which correspond to the information they provide. This information and stickers are then used by emergency workers whenever the need arises. Though there are several tools that can be used as a replacement, the company prefers using the website and stickers which makes it available to most health practitioner including a local pharmacy.

Name or list four or more technologies that improved patient care

There are quite a number of technologies used to improve patient care. The most commonly used technology in healthcare is an efficient and certified electronic health records (EHR) system. Surgical and service line technologies are also used though they require high financial investment for installation and running. Smartphones and tablets are used for research and information storage. Hybrid operating rooms and telehealth tools are technologies that have been around for decades and they keep improving with technological advancements. Ultrasound imaging devices and infection detecting technologies also improve patient care.

Name or list three or more groups that rely on information/data and describe in detail how information is utilized

Information and data collected from patients can be used by the medical practitioners in the hospital such as the doctors, nurses, EMT, nutritionists, clinicians among others to provide the necessary patient care needed. Additionally, the data/ information collected can be used by executives and the management for the planning, organizing and managing the healthcare facility. The management can work hand in hand with policy makers using this collected information to make relevant policies and regulations for the healthcare sector. Finally, this data can be used by scholars and academicians for research projects to further innovation and technologies.

Section C: Conclusion

Describe how a typical day on the job is like for you

Characteristically, nurses are expected to work during any shifts within the 24-hour day and they can be called in either day or night. However, for a clinical information manager, the shift is a regular daytime schedule. A Nursing Clinical Information Manager focuses on areas like documentation and maintenance of records in healthcare. I document dictations from the physician on duty into an EMR. Furthermore, I aid in the location and retrieving of patient’s diagnostic test results thereby ensuring efficient data flow in the facility. I monitor the patients’ stay at the facility by informing the provider when the test results have been received and following up on hindrances like late test results to ensure that that the patient’s flow at the facility is smooth. It is my responsibility to check for coding criteria from the physician documentation and selecting the appropriate codes.

How will completing this interview impact your practices as a BSN-prepared nurse? Give specific examples.

Through this interview, I have reminded myself what it is academically and professionally required for me to become a registered nurse as well as a clinical information manager. The question and pointers about evidence based practice showed me how much nursing changes on a daily basis and if I need to keep up with the market along with improving patient outcomes, I will have to keep updating my knowledge. Evidence based practice is very vital in the nursing profession despite all the drawbacks. With technology improving every day in the health sector, what I learn in class is not sufficient for me to survive in the working environment. I’ll have to invest a lot of my time into more researches and enroll in volunteer programs to sharpen my skills.

This resource was very important in providing knowledge on evidence based practice. I used it to remind myself of the importance of evidence based practice and why it has to be adopted in the healthcare sector. It also showed me the reasons why even though best evidence practice is important for the healthcare system, it is yet to be fully appreciated.
