Many theories surround nursing as a discipline; one of them stating that nursing should not borrow theories from other disciplines. This is not true because, throughout the nursing practice, nurses need to acquire information from another discipline such as physiology, psychology, sociology, medicine, and other related disciplines. The nursing theory collects knowledge that can be useful in the day to day nursing practice. Its importance is the fact that it improves the nursing practice positively and improves the health and the quality of life of service receivers.

The essence of the collaboration is to find if the discipline borrowed from fits the discipline of nursing. Sociology has played an important role in nursing practice. Nursing and sociology are two aspects that when put together it describes the people and how they interact. The theory is engaged in a situation that a nurse and the patient are trying to meet their different goals and needs. They will meet their level of satisfaction through a positive social-exchange of ideas, thoughts, and feelings. A nurse may need to understand the sociological part of the patient, that is, those social factors that influence health and well-being (Yoost & Crawford, 2015)

Nursing in collaboration with the medical theory is seen to change healthcare practices positively. The medicine discipline focuses on the cause of illness or dysfunction in the patient’s body and will find a solution to it. It involves a series of stages that will give way to the treatment of the disease. These are assessing the patient’s medical history, physical examination and finally performing the diagnostic tests. The process is of great relevance to the nursing practice since it gives them a way forward on handling patients depending on their health conditions. Therefore, it is evident that nursing practice without medical theories cannot achieve its key objectives of assisting patients during the recovery processes.

Another discipline that nursing should borrow theories from is psychology. Psychology theory seeks to understand why people behave, act, or even react the way they do. It is simply the study of mental and behavioural processes in an individual. It not only seeks to predict a person's behaviour but it also aims to change it to a better one that will enhance his/her well-being. Nurses ought to study the behaviour of their patients to be in a better position to serve them. They seek to understand the overall health needs of the patients and other necessities that will contribute to their recovery. The outcome will not only be of importance for the moment but also the future of both the patient and the nurse (Smith & Parker, 2015). Recently, I encountered a patient who was not in a position to open up about her sickness and how she was fairing on regarding her health. Upon various psychological tests, I realised that she was stressed up with her illness and that she often felt sorry for herself instead of dealing with it strongly. After an open talk with her, she got out of the stress, and she is now doing well at her home.

In conclusion, increased nursing collaboration with other disciplines has seen healthcare practice make huge strides. It has led to a significant improvement in patients' outcomes. This is attributed to the fact the nursing practitioners are now aware of all aspects surrounding the patient. The collaboration has brought about fewer preventable errors that could happen due to reluctance in seeking knowledge from other disciplines. Lastly, the collaboration has led to reduced healthcare costs.
