The fundamental of nursing practice entails the care framework tailored to meet the individual needs of the patients aiming specifically to attain optimum health outcome. Nursing knowledge and caring are a duo that complements each other in the integration of evidence-based practice. Besides, theories of nursing offer a tier of knowledge that helps in describing the caregiving phenomena and care rationales to advance critical engagement, as well as synthesize clinical judgment. Therefore, I will discuss the theory that I mostly connect with and how it has imp my nursing philosophical stand.
I strongly identify with Jean Watson in her principle of human caring. Watson promotes a holistic approach to nursing, highlighting caring as the core aspect. According to the theorist, patient care goes more in-depth than healing; it integrates the 'carative' factors in the caring process, which comprises of the fullness and wholeness of care. Clinical practice in nursing, therefore, entails comprehensive interventions in which nurses have to establish trusting relationships with their patients to provide them multi-dimensional care, which does not solely include physical healing but emotional, psychological, and spiritual too. Watson's theory of human caring further promotes patient-oriented care processes, which take place in an interpersonal context. The reason I relate with Watson is that I concur with the values her theoretical perspective introduces in nursing. The theory gives a reflective edge for individuals pursuing a nursing career, which makes it unique from any other field. The dynamic underlying roles of nurses are caregiving, educator, advocate for patients, counselor, as well as agents for change.
