1) How would you go about assessing the workplace for potential hazards? 

I would conduct periodic workplace inspections to assess new or recurring dangers. I would also investigate injuries and incidents to determine the shortcomings of the safety and health program. It is also important to group related incidents and identify trends in the occurrence of events to anticipate potential risks. 

2) Describe types of potential exposures and hazards in this workplace? 

Potential exposures and hazards are generally grouped into six categories: Physical, psychological, chemical, ergonomic, radiation and biological hazards. Physical hazards incorporate all incidents that threaten the physical safety of the employees by causing body injuries, illness or death. They include faulty machinery, fire, and poor lighting. Chemical hazards refer to occupational risks resulting from the exposure of chemical substances such as gases, fumes, and liquids.

Psychological hazards are those that emotionally affect the well-being of the employees; therefore, reducing their concentration at the workplace. They may be caused by harassment, discrimination, increased workload, and stress. Ergonomic hazards are incidents that cause damage to the human musculoskeletal system. Employees expose themselves to the risk while working with poorly designed equipment and workstations. Radiation incidents involve the transfer of energy through the air from a source. They include x-rays, radio waves, and heat. Biological hazards refer to viral and bacterial infections through cuts, animal bites or contact with an infected person. 

3) What are some of the factors that can/could contribute to declines in the rates of injury and illness at this workplace? 

The rate of injury and illness at the workplace can be reduced by establishing proper health and safety training programs to educate employees on correct safety practices. Regular monitoring of the workers should also be incorporated into the organization to ensure they follow the required safety procedures and correctly use the working equipment. During placement, the organization should ensure that the recruited individuals possess the necessary capabilities, therefore, reducing the occurrence of injuries and incidents.

4) What role can the school nurse play in addressing the issue of overweight and obesity? 

School nurses play a significant role in providing recommendations for proper diets in the school and promoting physical activities for the students. 

5) Describe the process of risk assessment for childhood obesity that would be used by the school nurse. 

The school nurses analyze the number of students seeking treatment from obesity-related illnesses such as fatigue and overweight and identify the level of implementation of co-curricular activities in the school. 

6) Identify three strategies that the school nurse could use to address these issues. Provide evidence to support your recommendations. 

School nurses should establish obesity awareness programs in the school to provide information about the effects of obesity and the methods of prevention. The nurses should also carry out annual screening for obesity among the students. It will provide information about the condition of the students to the school administration. They should advocate for the provision of proper diets in the school by recommending healthy foods. Obesity is generally caused by consuming high amounts of energy; incorporation of balanced meals in the school should help solve the problem.
