Patient education refers to the process through which health professional seeks to impart knowledge on their patients with the focus being on their health status and needs. The impact of patient education in health care cannot be ignored, especially concerning ensuring that patient satisfaction is achieved based on the quality of care being offered by health providers. Health care providers have been at the forefront in educating their patients as a way of ensuring that they can care for themselves through effective self-management approaches. I interviewed a member of my family is trying to understand the influence that patient education had on their experiences concerning the care that they received. This report is based on the responses received from the interview conducted in seeking to describe the importance of patient education.

One of the key questions asked during the interview was whether the patient had received instructions on how he would care for himself after the illness. The interviewee responded to the affirmative suggesting that the health professionals had provided information associated with promoting self-care. By providing information on self-care or self-management, health professionals seek to ensure that patients are in a better position allowing them to determine what they ought to be in a bid to protecting themselves from such diseases. Additionally, this also serves as a guarantee that the patient understands the nature of the condition and what is expected of him or her as part of the treatment and management of the condition. From the interview, I took note of the fact that the interviewee believed in the fact that the education given was vital in promoting him from future exposure to the illness.

Another critical question asked during the interview was whether the health professional involved in the treatment process provided the interviewee with advice on medication, diet, and exercises. In seeking to answer this question, the interviewee indicates that the education program was rather comprehensive considering that it found to ensure that he was able to self-medicate as one of the ways through which to define success in the treatment process. Additionally, he also indicated that he was given advice on the importance of maintaining a healthy diet, as well as engaging in regular exercise programs, which included walking and jogging, among others. Based on the response, it was clear that one of the key advantages associated with patient education is that it helps in promoting patient-centred care, which is personalized for individual patients.

I also asked the question of whether the interviewee believed that the patient education process had had any positive impacts, especially towards improving his health status after leaving the hospital. One of the key aspects to note is that the interviewee pointed out that he has experienced a significant improvement in his health status resulting from the fact that he adheres to and complies with all the information that he was given. The interviewee indicated that he believed that patient education has been of great value towards ensuring that he remains healthy, taking into account that his blood pressure has stabilized as a result of healthy eating and exercise. From this perspective, it can be argued that indeed patient education is critical towards establishing a clear front through which to improve on one's health, as it advocates for patient knowledge as a way of advancing positive health outcomes.
