In the provided case, Rick Evans’ confrontation with the other teachers is purely due to philosophical differences in the mode of teaching. The teachers favor an experimentalist approach while Rich Evans prefers an essentialist educational policy. It is also likely that Evans, for then 10 years he taught at the other school, used the essentialist approach and might have gotten used to it. Therefore, it is difficult to expect him to drop it, and adopt an approach he has never used or believe in it. Firstly, Sheryl ought to approach Evans and ask him why he prefers the essentialist approach to the experimentalist policy. He may have great insights, especially if he can prove its effectiveness by providing a positive performance record. Secondly, Sheryl needs to interact with the students to establish whether they like Evans’ approach. Some students may not like the idea of the experimentalist approach where they are required to test everything they learn, and try to relate with their environment. If Evans’ approach is found to have any merits, Sheryl ought to approach the other teachers and encourage them to be dynamic, and accommodate Rick Evans’ essentialist approach.

Teachers and instructors need to be flexible enough to adopt and accommodate diverse teaching strategies and philosophies in schools. Educational needs are changing, and teachers also need to align their strategies with the changing needs. Besides, different philosophies can be combined to achieve greater results. For instance, in light of the conflict between Rick Evans and the other teachers, the essentialist approach helps students to understand the basics of concepts before they can apply them. Before students are expected to try out new ideas and relate with their environment, they need to understand what they want to achieve. Therefore, it is important for learners to be exposed to different educational philosophies for better outcomes.
