The concept of patient and family engagement involve an effective partnership with the healthcare providers in order to enhance safety and quality of care in the hospital setup (Hetland et al., 2017). Therefore, this write-up seeks to outline factors that influence patient and family engagement, strategies to promote it, the existing disparities, and the role of the clinical nurse leader in this context.

There are several factors that influence patient and family engagement. Resource shortage is one of the key issues that affect the involvement of family in patient care (Hetland et al., 2017). Most of the healthcare institutions have inadequate staff, limited finance, and inadequate equipment. As a result, nurses are not adequately motivated to play their roles. The limited commitment to the patient safety due to resource scarcity contribute to the negative attitude toward patient and family engagement among nurses. They develop a poor perception of the family engagement. Additionally, the hospital environment also determines the extents of engagement. Healthcare institutions have a unique culture which plays a significant role in how healthcare providers relate to patients and family members. Effective management approaches enhance positive engagement (Lamb, 2017). Finally, the experience among nurses also impacts their attitude toward family involvement.

Nurses handle a diverse population in terms of age, gender, level of sickness, and cultural background. As a result, there are significant disparities in terms of response to medication, level of care, and approaches to their social and psychological needs. It is important that the hospital staff adopt such strategies as ideal discharge planning and improved communication (AHRQ, 2017). Additionally, effective nurse bedside shift report and involving families and patients in giving advice are part of the desirable approaches. Clinical Nurse Leaders as advocates work at the microsystem levels in which they educate, manage and coordinate activities that determine patient outcomes (Lamb, 2013). In conclusion, patient and family engagement is an important factor in promoting quality and safety standards in healthcare delivery.
