We are required to analyze the case study in communication between Mia and Mason. According to the case study, Mason practices nursing at a medical facility that accommodates about 80 elderly patients. Mason has worked within the facility more than any other nurse, and he formulated his schedule. He believes that due to his seniority and service, he deserves a different work schedule. The facility has been faced by a shortage of nurses. Mason’s supervisor, Mia, is focused on hiring new nurses; however, the new nurses can work only if they are provided with Mason's schedule.

Factors Affecting Their Perception and Effective Communication

Mason's perception of his situation most likely depends on the work setting, experience, attitude, and expectations. His attitude will determine whether he will react positively or negatively when he receives the news. His experience is the reason why he has raised his status in the workplace. He has raised his expectations and thinks that he deserves his work schedule separate from that used by the other nurses (Adler & Proctor, 2017). His views on the work setting will also sway his perception. Any person can understand that failure to get an ideal work schedule can lead to several difficulties in the workplace. Another factor likely to affect him is the social setting. Marisa may want a specific schedule that allows him to engage in other activities in his social life or other obligations.

Mia is a supervisor, and she has to give this kind of information hence putting her in a hard situation. Some of the factors influencing her work setting, expectations, attitude and motive. As the supervisor, she can decide to tell any senior employee that they can't get a work schedule that they think they deserve, and this might affect her work setting significantly. If he is a committed and a dedicated worker, this might change his dynamic at the workplace because he may feel that the new nurses have taken away his schedule. It may also create conflict, misunderstanding and mistrust between Mason and the new nurses. On the hand, her motivation is that she needs to increase the number of employees at the facility, and this might also affect the work setting (Adler & Proctor, 2017). The duty of the supervisor is ensuring that the workers are not overloaded by ensuring that there is enough staffing. Her attitude will determine whether she will be understanding and willing to listen to Mason’s grievances. She may expect Mason to follow the correct protocols without arguing.

Perception-Checking Statements

The perception checking statement can help in alleviating or doing away with these factors. For Mason, a statement may look like, "It seems that I will not the schedule I wanted. I thought that you had an issue with me or a mistake occurred during the process. Is there any issue?" Mia might use the following statement, "You look upset due to the schedule conflict. Is there something you need us to discuss?"

Improving communication

Both of them can improve their communication effectiveness. Mason should abandon his expectation because when they are not fulfilled, he will feel disappointed. Mia should understand her rational role because Mason might not be understanding the role of the supervisor. The pillow and the reversal method can help in enhancing communication (Adler & Proctor, 2017). The pillow method involves putting in another person's situation and try to imagine from his or her perceptive. Following the five steps of the reversal method will in clarifying the position of each party involved and also in highlighting the points of agreements to come up with a peaceful conclusion.

MO3. 4 &5

Several ways can help in reducing reticent when communicating in a communication. Such methods include handling anxiety, having a good time and continue the conversation and plan for a future date. Discriminate among aggressive, passive and aggressive responses and requests in interpersonal communications is important (Adler & Proctor, 2017). This can be achieved by practicing giving assertive responses and figuring out the best ways to assert yourself in each specific scenario. The other way to achieve this is by realizing where changes are needed and believing in your rights. Describe the situation, the feelings attached to it and pursue the change. Making use of “I” statements is also important in this scenario, for example, “ I feel emotional when someone is sick.”
