Thanks to this assignment, I was prompted to reflect on my leadership journey. I learnt that to succeed as a leader, I need to possess and build a number of critical strengths. Upon learning about my strengths, I must admit that I was rather surprised. The reflection that I conducted enabled me to understand that I am remarkably gifted. For example, it was thanks to this reflection that I gathered that I possess the strength to build communities and relationships. I am able to inspire others to recognize their own gifts and exploit them to improve their societies. While the results of the self-reflection left me surprised, my confidence in my leadership capacity also grew. As I gained deep insights into my strengths, I was able to understand that I am adequately equipped to take on the leadership challenge.
The style that a leader adopts has a significant impact on their effectiveness. I have adopted the visionary leadership style. I find that this style is the most effective given the complex challenges that the world faces today. We live in an era where people are losing faith and confidence in their leaders. My top five strengths are mostly in line with my leadership style. Focus, excellent communication skills, strategic thinking, a desire to learn and a desire for recognition are my greatest strengths. I believe that these strengths are critical for success as a visionary leader. For example, to communicate my vision and ideas to others, I need to listen to their concerns and inspire them with a moving description of the grand vision that I have.

Leaders are often required to perform the role of a manager. To execute these roles effectively, the leaders need to leverage their strengths. I am convinced that my most important strengths would allow me to perform managerial tasks effectively. For example, effective communication and innovativeness are critical strengths for managers who wish to move their organizations forward. Through effective communication, the managers listen and respond to the concerns that their employees raise. Being innovative and adopting strategic thinking enables managers to develop novel solutions to the challenges that they face. Managers also need to inspire and motivate their employees especially in moments of crisis. For example, suppose that employees are disgruntled and wish to go on strike. By speaking to the hearts and minds of these employees, the manager can convince them to return to work. I believe that my strengths would prove adequate in the role of a manager as they are critical for the performance of routine and special managerial duties.
One of the strengths that I possess is the ability to identify and fix my flaws. After a critical self-reflection, I gathered that there are numerous traits that I need to work on if I am to become a better leader. Emotional management and creating diverse teams are some of the issues that require more effort. I have learnt that I lack emotional intelligence as I am unable to communicate my emotions clearly. Furthermore, I tend to introduce emotions into matters that require sober and critical thought. I have also learnt that I tend to join forces with individuals who share my perspectives and style. This has made it difficult for me to develop diverse teams. I find that investing in these areas will allow me to perform well as a manager. For example, when confronted with a difficult situation, I will need to input of employees who think differently. Basically, I will have to promote diversity in my workforce. Emotional intelligence will also prove helpful as it will allow me to manage sensitive matters properly. Overall, as I invest in the traits which require work, I will be positioning myself to perform enviably well as a manager.
All the strengths that I possess have been vital in various endeavors that I have pursued. However, I feel that some strengths will be more useful in college and in my future career. I think that effective communication and a willingness to learn are the strengths that will drive most of my academic and professional growth. Through effective, I will be able to accept others and gain deeper insights into their lives. College and the workplace are environments that bring together people from diverse backgrounds. If I am to succeed in these environments, I must demonstrate empathy. I will also need to keep an open mind and be willing to gain new insights. I do not think that any learning can happen when one feels that they know it all.
