Personal code of conduct is sometimes referred to as personal code of ethics. Ethics are moral principles that guide a person’s behavior and can be used when making critical decisions (Mihelic, Lipicnik, & Tekavcic, 2014). Personal code of ethics is important for every leader at any position. Whether they are leading few people or many people, in a small organization or in a large organization, these ethics are crucial. There are times when as a leader, one is faced with a dilemma situation, and there is a need for distinguishing what is right and what is wrong. Through the personal code of conduct, one can determine what the best decision to make is.

My personal ethics include qualities that help me make the best decisions about any situation. As a leader, it is important to have a sense of direction and be able to lead the rest in the right direction. It is also important to make it known to the other subordinate staff what the personal code of ethics entails so that they can know how to interact with the leader at the workplace. Leadership ethics and values should be visible in an individual’s everyday actions. Since trust is a problem in many workplaces, it will form part of my personal code of conduct. Mistrust brings a lot of problems at the workplace, and it destroys interpersonal relationships at the workplace. As a result, the overall productivity of the organization is reduced. As a leader, it is important to lead by example and to become a trustworthy person that every other employee can rely on. As a leader, I need to make trust visible in all the ways to make sure that trust is not damaged. Trust can be measured in three main ways: the trusting capacity, perception of competence and perception of intentions. Trust is a core expectation for ethical leadership behavior.

My personal code of conduct that will make a difference in leadership position includes the following:

1. Integrity

The core values that integrity holds are trust and honesty (Flite & Harman, 2013). As leaders, I need to act integral and truthfulness when being watched and when I am not being watched. Integrity is an important value because people who are integral are highly dependable and reliable. As a leader, I need to be at the forefront in making integrity code of conduct visible and practical. Consequently, I would expect my members of staff to practice integrity at all times even when not under supervision.

2. Excellence

In everything I do, I do it to achieve excellence. Completing a task is not enough, but completing a task excellently is what I believe in. I will not settle for anything less than the best in all my professional and leadership endeavors. I value the quality of work and will not procrastinate tasks because I would want to deliver the work on time and excellently. This should as well be part of my members of staff. Once every member does his or her work excellently, the overall productivity of the department will increase.

3. Humility

I strive to remain humble and do not allow praise to get into me in a way that I will forget about humility. As a leader, I need to stay humble and always be polite to my superiors, peers, and juniors. I do not believe in using leadership position as a way to coerce members into things that are not acceptable to them. Humility helps me to freely and politely interact with all members of staff and spend the time to listen to their complaints and feedbacks.

4. Responsibility

Responsibility is a state of having the duty to deal or handle a situation. Responsibility also means the state of being accountable (Mihelic, Lipicnik, & Tekavcic, 2014). As a leader, I am accountable for every member of staff and take full responsibility for everything that is under my control. I do not value shifting blame to other people. It is important to take the responsibility of negative results and not only the positive results. It is easier to take ownership of good performance than of poor performance. On my leadership position, I will take responsibility for all my actions. This will also encourage the members of staff to value responsibility.

5. Teamwork

Teamwork involves working together with different people who have different skills to achieve a common goal. Embracing teamwork makes goals achievable in an organization. Teamwork improves the performance of each employee and makes workers feel part of the goal achieving. I believe in teamwork because working in harmony will increase the productivity of the department as well as for the whole team. Having a common goal and working as a team is important. As a leader, I will take the responsibility of managing the team and working together with my team members.

How to Communicate my Personal Code of Conduct

I will communicate my personal code of conduct across the organization by sending emails to the respective departments and producing hard copies of the code of conduct and supply them to the members of staff. These two modes of communication are effective in passing my personal code of conduct throughout the organization. The email is effective because they reach the target audience quickly. They are brief and on point. The printing of the hard copies is also effective to reach all subordinate members of staff and act as a reminder during my leadership service within the organization.
