Looking through the lens of utilitarianism, what do you think of Sanne's decision?
In a broad spectrum, the video by the title “Letting you go” presents a narration of Sanne’s planed self-euthanasia which places her family, friends and relatives in a dilemma and agony which in humanly nature is associated with losing a lovely-one. It is apparently clear that Sanne was suffering from borderline personality disorder, insomnia and chronic depression for quite a long period of time. She reached a point where she contemplated that she had suffered much and that it was her time to rest and sleep forever through subjecting herself to doctor-assisted suicide. Through the lens of utilitarianism approach, human beings are required to maximize on happiness for humanity. Sanne’s decision only inflicted pain, suffering and a life of agony for her close friends and family members something that could have been avoided is she considered changing her decision. According to the utilitarianism approach, Sanne should have considered community happiness over individual pleasure.

An in-depth analysis of the video raises numerous ethical questions about euthanasia in its entirety. Why would the society and family including Sanne’s father support her decision that much? Are there no legal and moral regulations that can guide the prevention of the actualization of decision to terminate one’s life? Was the decision by Sanne the only way she could deal with her agonizing adventure in her journey of life? The answers to the above questions may be different but it is apparent that self-euthanasia significantly causes more harm than good in regards to emotional pain. It is evident that Sanne’s father is yet to come into terms with what happened with her although he feels that she is at peace wherever she went.
What are the strengths or weaknesses you see in the arguments presented in the video?
It is evident that the video justifies the significance of euthanasia in the contemporary society although to some extend it establishes the challenges family members and friends experience aftermath. The strengths of the arguments include; it justifies the importance of ending periods of suffering in one’s life in a peaceful manner, it justifies the importance of autonomy and individual liberty, and provides evidence of beneficial traits associated with self-euthanasia. The only weakness identified is that it shows instances of emotional pain the people around patient’s who take similar decision as Sanne experience in identifying with the aftershock.
