“ Please Look after Mom” is a book by Kyung-Sook Shin, a South Korean novelist. The book talks about the family of a woman known as Park So-nyo. Park So-nyo, got lost at a train station in Seoul and has not been seen by her family members for a long period of time. Her husband, two daughters and two sons sadly think of the woman's love and devotion to her family.

The book talks about family and the responsibilities of the family members to each other. After the disappearance of their mother, the family members remember how they have not been friendly to their mother and how they have always ignored her. The first child, Hyong-Chol, who was the favorite child to her mother recalls how her mother would come to visit him with pumpkins and eggplants. He also remembers how mom gave all the food she heard to the children saying that she was not hungry (Shin, 2008). The eldest daughter on the other side, remembers how mom sold her only ring to pay for her tuition and when she wanted a book, she remembers how mom sold her favorite puppy to buy the book. The husband also remembers all the bad he had done to mom. He cursed her, spoke harshly to her and even at some point he sent her away from home and brought in his girlfriend. The family members all regret their actions toward mom. They all see how wrong they were by abandoning their mother because of their busy, heartless, stressed-out and newfangled city lives. They all promise to treat mom better if it not too late. The story tells us not to abandon the ancestral rites that used to hold the family together because of modernization as these days, the times that was meant for family gatherings is occupied by travel plans and there is no time for the family members.

To live is a story by Yu Hua, a Chinese novelist.it talks about the son a rich land-owner known as Fugui. The Chinese revolution caused historical events that interfered with the nature of the Chinese society. The story begins by the narrator traveling to the countryside to collect local legends and folk songs. He hears an old peasant about the involvements that he has gone through that involves witnessing the death of all his family members.

This novel talks about the sad times that some people go through when they see the other family members suffer. And it hurts more when they suffer and there nothing you can to help them. For example in this story we see Xu Fugui making a mistake of gambling with the family's wealth. After gambling with the whole fortune he is forced to join the army made him leave his family members with nothing to depend on (Yu Hua, 1993). When the war ends, he comes back home and finds that his mother died of a stroke, his daughter is almost losing her hearing from a fever. Fugui’s son comes to die later due to some complications while donating blood. All his family members die with the last being his grandson who died after being choked to death while eating beans. This tells us the importance of a family as Fungui became a lonely man after the death of all his family members. It is also very important to make very careful decisions as some decision may make us regret for the rest of our lives. A family is very important and we always do everything possible to keep our families from sufferings.
