Corruption committed by police officers is a critical integrity issue. This paper explores illegal and unethical actions by the police in Andrew Ford’s 2018 article N.J. Cop Took $100K in Bribes from Brothel Owners, Feds Say. Receiving bribery is one of the actions that illustrate police corruption and misconduct. Bribery is an illegal action. According to the law statute, 18 U.S.C. Section 201, corruption through bribery is a criminal offense; Section 201 (b) criminalizes bribery among public officials in the United States (FindLaw, 2020). The police officer broke the law by obtaining bribes, which is a criminal offense.

Furthermore, being an illegal activity, bribery is also unethical. “No State officer or employee or special State officer or employee should use or attempt to use his/her official position to secure unwarranted privileges or advantage for him/herself or others” (State Ethics Commission, 2019). The officer in question used his position as police to solicit bribes for his gain. Therefore, it is unethical because it goes against the Uniform Ethics Code in the State of New Jersey. Besides, bribery is unethical not only because it destroys respect and dignity of the police adherence to the law, but also undercuts discipline in the police depart, and harms morale among the police.

Aiding and assisting in the preparation of false tax returns is illegal. Julio Rivera did not disclose full income while filing his tax returns. According to Ford (2018), Rivera kept his bribery payments a secret from his tax preparer, making his tax returns understated for five years. Tax understatement is illegal in the United States. In line with the I.R.C. § 7206, assisting or aiding the preparation of a fraudulent or false document is a criminal offense (Legal Information Institute, 2020). Rivera committed a federal tax crime because his actions assisted in making a false statement to the I.R.S.
