The story “The Popol Vuh” is an old piece of writing which is credited to Francisco Ximenez as one of the first people who made a copy from the original text. Popol Vuh is a story that takes place in the ancient K’iche’ in Mayan. It expounds on the history of earth creation and the early evolution in Mayan. In the start, there is nothing under the sky. There is no animal; no people or landform, there is only the sea and the sky. In the waters, there is Sovereign Plumed Serpent while the sky has a group of gods known as the Heart of the Sky. The three gods, namely Sudden Thunderbolt, Newborn Thunderbolt, and Hurricane descend from the sky to speak to Sovereign Plumed Serpent. In their plans, they wonder what the dawn would look like; hence, they empty the sea to create the land. But since there is no one to appreciate their work, they find the need to create human beings. This shows the purpose of creating human beings. The primary purpose creating human beings is to praise and worship the gods.

“Let the water clear away. So the plate of earth comes toward the light”. The narrator gives a glimpse of how the land came into formation. Something interesting in the text is how human beings were made. Since the gods wanted to make someone that would praise their work, human beings were proposed as ideal. The first attempt of making human beings from mud end in awful results as the creatures cannot hold together. The Sovereign Plumed Serpent then consults with the gods of the sky with caution not to make the same mistake. They opt to make human beings from wood, and the results are exemplary. But human beings cannot perform as per expectations; they are later swept away by the floods. One of the most significant themes that are revealed is the theme of worship. The gods demand to be worshipped, and since animals cannot worship, they are ranked below human beings, creating the theme of hierarchy.
