Ernest Hemingway writes a short story about the short life of a man called Francis Macomber. The story is about Francis and how he wanted so hard to show people how courageous he was. His tribulations began the previous night with the roar of a lion; the lion's roar kept Francis, and his wife up all night, in the morning Francis woke up early with the mission to hunt the lion. He sought the company of his wife Margot and his friend Robert Wilson. The marriage between Margot and Francis was one of convenience; Francis did not want to leave his wife because it would affect his social status while Margot did not want to leave his husband it would change her financial situation. They took the African safari to try and sought their marital issues.
Masculinity is bravery, courage, and fearlessness. Francis was nothing close to being masculine because he was a coward in all aspects, he struggled to deal with his fear of death, the moment where Francis was to prove himself he failed terribly, fled the scene screaming and sweating instead of approaching the lion that had terrorized him throughout the night. Francis is a representation of those people who only talk so much about what they can do, but in a real sense, they are cowards. He is a much-respected man in America; he is has been in several situations where was courageous, for that reason prepared his attack on the lion in head throughout the night but when morning came he let everyone down. Margot is an adulterous woman stays in her marriage because of the financial security; her marital status does not prevent her from starting a relationship with Wilson, she sees him as everything her husband is not.

The story is about courage and integrity, Francis was a coward, he was not able to fight and kill a wounded lion instead he fled the scene shouting and sweating. He left his African tour guide Wilson to finish of the lion, which he does and uses that opportunity to seduce Francis’ wife. To Margot masculinity is one of the qualities she wants in a man apart from his money that is the reason why Margot went for Wilson. She describes Wilson as a macho man who is strong, courageous and brave because he fought the lion which Francis ran from cowardly.
Francis tries to cover face just like any other person would do by trying to kill another animal to prove he is brave and fearless. This time he is successful in the murder of a Buffalo, this process ignites a fire in him, and he feels that he has to do it again just to confirm the first outcome. However, his joy is short-lived after Margot and Wilson conspired to kill Francis. They stage the murder as a shooting accident so that they can continue with the affair without worrying about Francis.
Francis had finally proved himself worthy of the eyes of other people and his wife who was disgusted by his previous act of cowardliness. He had proved himself worthy just like Wilson. However, his joy and self-confidence were short-lived. Francis represents many people in the society, who go through issues, but they end up failing and instead of wallowing in self-pity they get up and try again. He represented success because it is the outcome of failing and trying again. Even if he was short by his wife, he died feeling like a brave, fearless man. Margot did not even recognize his husband’s efforts of trying to prove himself all she saw was an obstacle to her affair with Wilson.
