Racial profiling is normally combined with a possible negative deed. It is the generalization of people by society or law enforcement based on gender, religion, nationality, ethnicity, race, and other undeniable characteristics instead of relying on evidence-based apprehensive behavior (United Nations, 2019). It subjects individuals to identity checks, detailed searches, stops, and investigations to decide whether they were engaged in crime. It normally results in biased decision-making. It has been experienced for a long time despite being a social problem but has gotten more attention now that the internet and technology have been innovated. In the United States, people have raised concern about racial profiling because it has been considered discriminatory. Most people who have experienced the process in the US are African-Americans.

However, racial profiling encompasses various pros and cons. For example, it is an effective method of catching lawbreakers before they commit a crime. The police can stop and question a suspicious person who might be a terrorist or a criminal, hence preventing a crime. On the other hand, engaging in racial profiling is a violation of a person’s right in the US ( Gaille, 2017 ). The reason is that it is a discriminatory act. A person might be treated like a criminal then turns out to be innocent. Therefore, it can help prevent crimes that could have occurred and result in bad mindsets and stereotypes among individuals.

Conversely, racial profiling is not as effective as people might view it in law enforcement since there is no assurance that it will fully stop a crime after the process. Racial profiling is more like a guess. For example, in most cases, African-Americans and Muslim experience the practice, yet a white man can also be a criminal. In a Chicago Police Department report, Hispanic and African-American drivers were stopped and searched more times than the whites. Yet, the whites had contraband often than the blacks and Hispanics ( Gaille, 2017 ). Therefore, the pros and cons of racial profiling outline that the practice ought to be stopped. Also, it might not be wise to assume crime.
