Ethics are the societal norms of conduct that distinguish between acceptable and unacceptable behavior. Like other disciplines, I have learned that research practice also contains a set of ethics that govern the performance of scientific procedures. Therefore, researchers and government agencies are obliged to follow all the research guidelines. In this respect, ethics helps promote research objectives, minimize errors, and promote accountability among researchers. For instance, I believe that without ethics, several animal species could have been endangered as a result of exploitation since research would be conducted through personal intent rather than objectives.
Besides, I believe that researching with indigenous people is integral in promoting accountability amongst researchers. For instance, research involving human subjects should be conducted with the sole purpose of protecting human dignity. Therefore, when the indigenous people are involved in the procedures, they will be subjected to no harm. For this reason, there exist federal policies that govern the research procedures involving human subjects (Resnik, 2011). Besides, ethics also ensure collaborative work amongst researchers and community members, thus the phrase “nothing about us without us." In this respect, I believe the research procedure would promote objectivity and minimize bias, an integral quality of effective research.

I have also learned the importance of researchers' good personal attributes when dealing with indigenous groups during research. Due to the diversity associated with different indigenous groups, fostering good relationships with indigenous groups is essential (Silverman, 2016). For instance, indigenous communities in Canada, such as Inuit, are multi-cultured; thus, researchers are obliged to adhere to their beliefs in the event of researching with such communities.
Lastly, some research practices might be illegal, but ethical has impacted me the most. For this reason, I believe that researchers have to distinguish between ethics and law. Therefore, this calls for competence and personal responsibility amongst researchers since it promotes objectivity while conducting research.
