Members in an ethnic group identify with a common cultural beliefs and values, while those of the same racial group share their visible physical characteristics. My race is black skin white by ethnicity is African American, based on the social and cultural groups. This identity has impacted several aspects of my social experience, including affecting access to health care access and job opportunities. For example, black people do not have the same access privileges to healthcare than white racial groups.

Some of the popular and pervasive stereotypes show towards black people in the United States is a belief that they are criminals, lazy and ignorant. These stereotypes mostly lead to racism towards the blacks and emerged from the slavery era. In this link,  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EW-mPQkFd1M , the sociologists speak about the association between black people and crime which is generated by fear. In most cases, stereotypes can interfere with a person’s daily interaction and lead to racism. They exist to simplify the social world through social categorization and reduce the chances of analyzing the situation categorically. Furthermore, stereotypes can make someone ignore differences between individuals by assuming all members of a group have the same characteristics.

Prejudice differs from discrimination in the sense that prejudice deals with the irrational and unjustified negative attitudes and perceptions held towards a certain group. In contrast, discrimination refers to the behaviors directed towards the group. Someone with prejudice will show preconceived opinions and perceptions towards a certain individual or group which can be manifested through discrimination.

Prejudice passes through three stages before it manifests into discrimination. The first one is the cognitive level that describes the beliefs, opinions and perception of an individual towards a certain group that are often negative thoughts. This then moves to the emotional level that involves development of feelings of hate or prejudice towards the said group. Lastly, prejudice moves to the action-oriented level that is described by a negative predisposition to discriminate against a person or group. An example of prejudice is in the workplace shown against overweight women more than anyone else. As a result, people will start feeling contemptuous against overweight women, and the government will choose them for a less visible job compared to other employees, this causing discrimination.
