Race law refers to various racial grouping laws, such as the ones founded on the feeblemindedness theory. These laws propose racial groups and influence interactions between racial categories. For example, they determine who a White is and who is not for citizenship issues. The boundaries created by these laws constantly shift according to a pattern. Racial laws have led to immigration restrictions and issues related to the criminal justice system, among many others. Racial categories, created by race law, are driven by some instrumental interests. In “Kids Caught in the Crackdown,” the immigration restrictions for the children is an example of race law. The fact that the children are from Mexico places them in a certain racial group, and they are considered illegal immigrants. They are categorized as non-Whites hence taken to custody because they are illegally residing in the United States. Martin is an example of an individual subjected to race law because of his racial category.
Material determinism means that the idea of race is generated by material interests. In addition, material interests influence the content of racial groups, including how they shift as time goes by. Material determinism is evident in movements such as feeblemindedness and how it is funded by individuals who have interests in creating excuses for exercising inequality. There are individuals who have their material interests met through creating these inequalities. In the film “Kids Caught in the Crackdown,” there are private companies that run shelters for the detained immigrant children. Such companies make money by sheltering detained children who are separated from their families because they are considered illegal immigrants. For example, Shelter Programs for Comprehensive Health Services ran a shelter and received approximately $300 million to run the programs. In the film, it is indicated that the company’s leadership includes a former White House chief who supported the policy of forcefully separating children from their families along the border.
