Perhaps the most debated phenomena in history and one that is still a pertinent issue in societies globally, especially in westernized countries is the issue of race. Racial ideologies predate the contemporary world and exist in numerous forms and degrees. In America, the dominant white populations of the late 18th and 19th centuries established stereotypical anecdotes regarding Africans brought to their shores as slaves. As time passed, such prejudices have stuck in American society outlining and underscoring every developmental progress. For the overriding white population, such ideologies remain significant to date. The present social construction of race continues to be implemented in various facets be it in the education system, housing and community developments, and many other societal, economic and political structures. The reason for white supremacy and negative stereotypes against African-Americans remains broad. However, one explanation frequently accentuates most racial bigotry; and that is profit and overall suppression of opportunities. Profit started during the slavery days from cheap labor which transcended down to opportunity clampdown during the 20th century in terms of education and other social amenities. This consequently resulted in a domineering white population thus reinforcing the need for negative stereotypes against Africans.

In the current society, racial ideology persists in many subtle ways, and most stereotypes that were in the past have endured or have morphed into other cultural generalizations of the black community that are downright incorrect. The success of the Civil Rights Movement brought a new era of racial bigotry, which targeted cultural difference. The persistence of racial bigotry is now in stereotypes such as, the regard that African-American culture depicts a society that is not disciplined and one that does not work hard to attain success. Such a stereotype is false since, for many years, African-Americans are not accorded the same educational opportunities as whites, keeping in mind that the realization of the “American dream” depends heavily on education. Moreover, employment and income are not equally distributed. In the end, whites benefit on all societal aspects while the continual suppression of African-Americans persists.
