Based on the modern technology and development, scientists have developed major practical applications to the use of radioactivity. Radioactive elements have unstable nucleus that give beta and alpha radiations to come up with stable and usable elements. The radioactive elements have been useful in the society as they have been applied in the health sectors and energy sections (Uhlik, 2016).

Radioactivity has majorly been applied in medicine through the production of the ionizing radiations that help cure many diseases. For example, the cancer treatment has been possible through radio activity since the infected cells are killed by these radiations. The radioisotopes were also used in quality imaging of the liver, bones in the body, and other sensitive parts of the body. Other diseases such as trauma and physiological impairments can be controlled through the detection that is done by the gamma rays.

The most common isotopes that are used in medicine include (Essays, UK 2013):

Cobalt-60: this has a half life period of 10.5 months and it is used for external beam radiotherapy.

Iodine-125 is used in cancer Brach therapy mainly in prostrate and brain cancers. The Iodine-125 is also used in the evaluation of kidney failure.

Erbium-169 helps in reducing pain of arthritis in the joints. The isotope has a life of 9.4 days.

Chromium-51 is helps in quantifying gastro- intestinal protein loss through the labeling of the red blood cells. The half life is 28 days.

Iodine-131 has a half life of 8 days and it is used in the treatment of thyroid cancer.

Xenon-133 helps in pulmonary study and it has a 5 day purpose.

Phosphorus-32 is used in the treatment of polycythemia Vera which is the excess red blood cells in the body.

Thus, the radioisotopes have helped to reduce cancer growth in a human body and the medical industry is also able to do X-rays along with other medical procedures.
