Recommendations for the Success of a Functional Organization

A functional organization is comprised of a group of people or other legal entities with an explicit purpose and clear rules. All the parties in a given organization have different domains of expertise which collectively lead to the achievement of the organization’s goals. Therefore, it is important to for all members to coexist as a team, and to be passionate about their areas of expertise . For an organization to be successful in pursuing its goals, teamwork, empower ment, passion, and respect are requisite. This paper seeks to share the recommendations that would be vital to any organization with regard to these four elements. 

Teamwork refers to the cooperative effort of a group of people which is aimed at achiev ing a mutual goal. A functional team often has a leader oversees the efforts of all the team members and guides them to wards the achievement of specific goals. Teamwork plays a significant role in increasing organizational efficiency . This is because it is easier to tackle a project or any given assignment as a team rather than individually. Through teamwork, tasks can be accomplished efficiently and faster. One way to boost teamwork is by implementing recognition programs to reward good performance of individual employees or groups. This can be achieve d through the use of incentives which favor the team members. For instance, the provision of appraisal and tokens of appreciation for rewarding quality work helps in making the workforce feel appreciated . Likewise, it m otivate s them to work together to complete all the assigned tasks in time. E ncouraging social activities can also significantly improve teamwork in an organization. These team-building activities can be informal in some instances. Some notable options include meeting for coffee or lunch, camping, sports events and sponsored resorts. As the employees interact, they understand each other better . Also, this boost s communication, translating to enhanced teamwork. Teamwork can also be encouraged by mediating disputes arising among employees quickly and efficiently. Clear guidelines should be defined on how to deal with any disagreements that arise between the team members. To achieve this , the team leader should encourage the members to share all the issues that arise . Subsequently, he or she is expected to come up with amicable solutions and ways of preventing the occurrence of such disputes in the future .

Empowerment of employees in an organization immensely contributes to its success. Empowerment should be viewed as the process of supporting a person to discover and claim his or her power. Empowered employees are more confident in their work, and this translates to better organizational performance. According to Zenger & Folkman (2007), 67% of employees are willing to give extra effort in team engagement when empowerment is high compared to only 4% of employees who participate when empowerment is low . E mployees in an organization can be empowered by involving them in planning and setting of organizational goals when possible. This is important because the employees fe el more valued. Engaging employees in organizational planning also results in the inclusion of ideas, insight experience and value that could not be found in the senior management team. Creating openness to new ideas also leads to the formulation of targets that are achievable and policies that are favorable to the employees . Further, it aids in the development of the employees. E mpowerment can also be improved by giving authority to team members . This raise s their confidence and morale. Giving employees more freedom and a uthority in the i r work build s confidence and empowerment at the workplace. However, leaders need to ensure that the employees are skilled and knowledgeable enough to make right decisions before giving them authority . 

Passion is a vital contributor to the success of an organization. Passion pertains to one's determination or fervor about something. To increase the passion of employee s in their activities , the building of supportive teams within departments and the entire organization is highly recommended. This allows the employees to discuss goals and obstacles openly. The teams can also engage in exercises that help them overcome individual member blind spots and barriers. It also helps the e mployees to identify their weaknesses and strengths , which resul ts in a better overall performance of the organization in the long run. Passion in the workplace can be enhanced by ensuring that all employees are given responsibilities that are in line with their aspirations and capabilities. This ensures that they are driven while undertaking the tasks. This can also be attained by making sure that an organization’s goals and objectives are driven towards serving a greater purpose. This is particularly the case where organizations are aimed at solving specific problems, in the process enhancing people’s lives and making the world a better place. This can be complemented by making the working environment both conducive and inspiring. 

Respect in an organization can be viewed as the attitude of consideration for other workers feelings and opinions . Respect in an organization can be fostered by developing clear guidelines and policies for ensuring that all employees feel accommodated and esteemed. These guidelines ensure that all employees , irrespective of rank or contribution are valued and recognized. Ultimately, this creates a healthy workplace where each employee is treated as an irreplaceable member of the team. 

While change is inevitable in any organization, r esistance to change is a common phenomenon. This can be overcome by focusing on the principal causes of the resistance to chang e a s opposed to its symptoms . Once identified, t hese issues should be formally discussed and addressed. Good communication between the senior and subordinate staff should also be encouraged to ensure th at all employees are well informed of the proposed changes . Moreover, involving all employees in all stages of the change process might be useful in addressing the resistance. 

The need for teamwork, empower ment, passion, and respect in the workplace cannot be overstated . This is because an organization’s operations rely heavily on these factors. Therefore, implementation of the above recommendations will improve not only the quality of work but also the overall success of the organization .
