Different professions and apprenticeships require different levels of care and supervision. Growing up, parents will regularly allow their children to undertake some of the house tasks but under strict supervision. For instance, a mother can teach the daughter to stir the food and let it her to do it as she washes the other ingredients or a father teaching the son how to close a screw or repair the sink. All these processes can be easily reversed if they were to go wrong. People in professions such as design get permitted to cut the materials as much as they need to learn the processes. Nevertheless, medicine students can attest that this will never happen in their case since they are dealing with irreversible processes. A small mistake could lead to a lifetime of regret and even loss of the practicing license. Home care nurses need to be careful when handling the ‘know it all students’ since they tend to push them to violate some of the rules and regulations.
Practicing nurses have the professional responsibility of regulating the students’ activities during their visits to ensure the welfare of the patient gets withheld. The home care nursing regulations set by the firms and government do not permit the students to touch the patient in any way ( College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia, 2012) . The schools sending the students, warn the nurses about letting the students perform the tasks since the purpose of the visits is only observation ( Lúanaigh, 2017) . Additionally, the health care firms, for instance, the Stream Home Care, warned the nurses against trusting the student to perform even the simplest of tasks. The practicing nurses, such as Steve, understand that they are liable for their mistakes; thus, they will do all they can to keep the patients safe.

One must unlearn what they know to learn anything in life. The student in the case study, Frank, carries himself as a practicing nurse because some years back his mother taught him most of the things they teach in school. He undermines most of the nurses because he thinks the knowledge he acquired years back is enough to make him a nurse. It is understandable and acceptable that he learned his first practice through apprenticeship. However, the world keeps changing as people try to find better and efficient ways of doing things. The student has to understand what he learned in the conventional approach is different from what gets taught in nursing school. The kind of attitude he presents will hinder him from absorbing much of the things. He will always miss out on the intricate details since he is on an ‘error finding’ (during lectures) and a ‘self-proving’(still trying to prove how much he knows) mission. It is next to impossible for him to reap anything from the nursing school, and chances are he will fail or get expelled before the end of the course.
Although the student says that he has practiced as a nurse before, rules and regulations of practice have to be followed. Frank’s overconfidence will hinder his ability to become a safe student since he is out to question anything that was not taught to him by his mother. He ends up trying to force situations to align with his desires by attempting to blackmail his supervisor, a deed that makes one question his character as a nurse, a profession that calls for discipline and patience ( Lúanaigh, 2017) . The nurses would be putting lives at risk if they were to allow the student to continue the learning process at such a pace. It is permitted for one to read ahead of the teacher and know a little more, but it is uncouth to develop an attitude over it. Learning is a process that never ends, and the students should be patient and open to more knowledge.
