In this paper, a description of a relational databases and its use by modern organizations is offered.
A relational database is a database whose symbols are arranged into a set of relations. It consists of a set of tables, which can be manipulated based on the relational model of data. Data in a relational database is arranged in relations or tables. A table contains columns and rows. The relationship that tables in a relational database create allows it to store a large amount of data efficiently and enables effective retrieval of the data (Suri & Sharma, 2011).

Most organizations today use relational databases to effectively store and manipulate a large amount of heterogeneous data. For example, an organization can use the database to store product information, such as product price, photos and description, and allow customers to access the information through a website (Mosheshe, 2017). The airline industry also uses a relational database to store, manipulate, and retrieve data, such as bookings, ticket information, and financial transactions, which enhance efficiency and saves time (Mosheshe, 2017). Relational databases also assist organizations to distribute their service objectives and manage costs since any person across the world can find any information they need using a computer connected to the internet (Mosheshe, 2017). Organizations use relational databases to promote 24/7 operations since the stored information can be made available always, which is vital, particularly, to companies, whose customers or personnel must access information instantly from any location (Jatana, Puri, Ahuja, Kathuria, & Gosain, 2012). Unavailability of such data may lead to profit losses or loss of customers.
Companies also use relational databases to store different kinds of data for an extended period, regarding their operations, which they can use to gain insight about their performance to improve their efficiency. The redundancy feature of relational databases allows organizations to store data across different locations, which ensures the availability and safety of data even if a single server malfunctions (Suri & Sharma, 2011). Organizations also use relational databases to enhance the security of the stored data because the databases can limit access to data to authorized people only (Jatana et al., 2012).
In conclusion, a relational database can manage the association between the different database components. Companies use this database to record, update, and track data. They also reach customers through this data and use the data to improve their efficiency.
