The article addresses the shift in the media that have been witnessed as a result of the technological development. The world is currently witnessing the erosion of the type of social condition that was initially known as the audience. The structure of the technology-based media has in the past undergone a series of change due to the internet and technological development. The emergence of the distribution channels which are fundamentally open has enhanced the introduction of new communication platforms in which millions of individuals are actively involved (Rosa, 2012). Other than the traditional media platforms, the emergence of technology has led to the introduction of other communication devices such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. These have represented the new media, with the current reports showing that millions of individuals are rapidly shifting away from the old media platforms to the new ones. The research focuses on the way technology has led to the shift from the old media platform to the new one with the data presented to reflect the percentage change from the old to the new media. Millions of individuals have gone into the use of modern media platforms as a means of mass communication. The result has been a dynamic form of space in the new media being identical to the general structure of space networks.
The title of the article should be between 10 to 15 words and should identify the purpose of the study to the reader. In this article, the title “From mass communication to new media: a network perspective,” fails to provide a clear purpose of the study because by just reading the title alone, one may not know what the article is about until further reading is done. In the abstract, however, the author identifies the purpose of the study to the reader so that one can understand why the article has been written. A scholarly research article requires that the abstract clearly explains and defines the purpose of the study to the reader. “The purpose of this article is to determine the structural form of new online media, with network theory as the main framework of analysis.” The article also presents the research problem in the introductory paragraph of the research. This makes the reader understand the problem that the researcher intends to solve by doing the research. It allows the reader to understand the major problem that the researcher wants to get a solution by conducting the study.

The research article has presented a literature review in a way that defines and develops the research questions. There is sufficient information provided by the author on the background information and previous findings concerning the emergence of new media platforms in the current generation. The author reflects on many previous studies by other researchers on similar areas to the research topic. This provides the reader with an understanding of the whole information regarding the subject of research. However, the literature review of scholarly research should identify the methods of data collection while at the same time recognizing the gaps that exist in the literature and then goes ahead to provide a way in which such gaps can be filled. However, in this research article, the author only gave a reflection on the literature review without identifying the methods of data collection, the gaps in the literature review and how to fill these gaps. This makes it difficult for the reader to understand if any gaps exist in the literature review and how they can be filled.
Under research methodology, the author of the article has employed a quasi-experimental research design. The research design clearly illustrates how the study has been undertaken to understand the credibility of the whole research process. On the data collection, the author of the article fails to mention the method of data collection adopted. In the quantitative research, various methods can be utilized by the researchers to collect the data for the study. These should include questionnaires, interviews or even observation. These methods enable the readers to understand the technique that the author used to collect the data being presented and to understand the credibility of the whole research. By just showing the data without mentioning the method that was used to collect such data, the reliability of the entire research becomes questionable.
Upon the identification of the appropriate method of data collection, it is a requirement that the researcher provides a research instrument design used in the study. The researchers can have the choice of either using the previously designed instruments or developing the one after the survey. The author of the article, however, fails to declare the choice of the instrument design to the reader. This leaves the reader with the task of having to guess which instrument design was employed by the researcher in the study. While it may sometimes prove difficult to design an instrument, the overall aim of the researcher should be to make the final questions of the research directly linked to the research questions at the start of the study. The author, however, demonstrated high levels of validity and reliability in the study. There was consistency in the way the research was conducted and presented by the researcher. Validity is based on the ability of the instrument to measure what it is supposed to, while reliability is based on the consistency of the instruments. The author demonstrated high levels of consistency while presenting the data of the research on the shifting media platforms. The author created a clear connection between the internet emergence, the old media platforms and the new media platforms. The author further presented the data on the rate at which shift has occurred in the media communication through the last few years.
On the analysis of the results, the research is expected to identify the statistical tests that were used, why such tests were used and the results of such tests. However, the researcher failed to identify the statistical tests used and why they were used. Instead, the researcher only describes the outcome of the tests in a general form. This makes it difficult for the reader to identify and understand how the researcher arrived at such results and hence may affect the credibility of the whole research. For example, the researcher mentions that we are currently witnessing an erosion in the communication media, with most people shifting to the new media platforms. There is, however, no statistical tests to confirm this analysis and conclusion.
The discussion part of the research findings is expected to have a logical flow and then relate back to the literature review. In case the hypothesis has supported the results, this should be mentioned in the discussion. The researcher of the article has provided a discussion logically and have been related to the literature review through the connection of the findings on the media shift and audience to the previous studies on the shifting media communication. The author, however, fails to provide the significance of the results to the reader as expected. Also, no relationship has been made between the findings and the inferences that were drawn in the study. The researcher provides a sufficient list of references for the study to show where the ideas of other researchers were borrowed or paraphrased.
