As a medical assistant, what can you do to make sure you are prepared to be evaluated on the ECG/EKG check off?
Among the competencies required for a successful ECG/EKG include the verification of the identification policy regarding the patient's identity, observing hand hygiene, communicating to the patient about the procedure, and ensuring patient privacy is upheld according to privacy standards, and preparing the patient for the procedure by preparing their skin, and ensuring their proper anatomical position. Another set of competencies involves handling the EKG machine. These include correctly placing the lead, switching on the machine, mastering the use of the keys on the machine, and using the keys where appropriate.

Name a respiratory or cardiac condition that was not discussed in this week's material and provide a few sentences on the condition and what you could do as a medical assistant to help the patient.
Congenital heart disease is a series of heart defects that manifest at infancy. These defects affect the heart structure, and they may range from simple forms that do not require treatment, to complex ones that require surgical procedures to repair. Types of congenital heart diseases include arterial septal defect, bicuspid aorta valve, and double-outlet right ventricle, among others (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2018). Congenital heart disease can be accompanied by complications such as stroke, congestive heart failure, slow growth and development, and emotional issues. As a medical assistant, interventions would include giving the patient a rubella vaccine, monitoring and controlling underlying and risk chronic conditions such as diabetes.
What have you learned from the P.R.I.C.E Model of Success that you feel will be important when assisting cardiac and respiratory emergencies in your office and explain why?
From the P.R.I.C.E model, the tenet of being Caring is the most important. As a caring medical assistant, handling medical emergencies will be guided by the desire to restore wellbeing, to see the patient for the individual they are, rather than the condition they have come in with, and the zeal to urgently attend to their needs, point out the problem and fasten the recovery process.
In your opinion, what is the most important takeaway that was presented in this week's material, and how will it relate to your career as a medical assistant?
From the week's readings, I have been moved by the attention given to cardiac and respiratory diseases, as these form a majority of the hospital's emergency cases. The application of the P.R.I.C.E Model’s success emphasizes the skill-set demanded of medical assistants, that we have to be professional, have respect, integrity, be caring, and engaging. These values will be the foundation of my practice.
