The social gap in America has been in existence for many generations, especially between the rich and the poor. This creates social classes namely upper, middle and lower class. As a result, people living in the same society interact differently as they go about their daily activities. Some of the factors leading to this divide include;

1.Reflective effects of global change both locally and internationally. These effects often cause an economic and social gap in industrialized nations, particularly the United States. The opportunities of people living in different classes are affected by globalization and technological changes. For instance, decline in manufacturing jobs majorly affects families’ dependent on decent wages to cater for their healthcare and pensions.

2.Race and gender are among main factors causing the divide among Americans. Despite the country’s civilization policies, white Americans still hold a larger share in wealth distribution compared to their racial counterparts; Hispanics, Latinos and black Americans. Likewise, women are treated unequally in the society. For example, they receive less pay than men while doing equal work.

3.Unequal distribution of resources and power in the society also causes divide among its habitants. The top ten percent amasses massive wealth while the bottom class work really hard but have very little to show for it. Hence, the top class thrive in their greed as the layman suffers in silence; causing tensions between classes.

However, all is not lost since something can be done to reduce this gap. First, social mobility which emphasizes on the American dream should be upheld, despite the class system. The notion that those born at the top or bottom class always remain there should come to an end. This can be achieved by recognizing and fairly awarding individual effort regardless of class, gender or race. Secondly, the current organization in the society ought to change. Inequality based on class or status leaves a small percentage controlling a vast share of the nation’s wealth. However, if the government was to provide equal opportunities for people from all races, gender and age brackets, this would change.
